Response:
In
Amos; 3:7
, the Lord says that He doesn’t do anything, except He reveal it to His prophets. We have seen many
changes since President Nelson has been chosen as the living prophet. I know he is the authorized person to receive
revelation for all of us and Heavenly Father works through him if He wants to communicate something which is for all
His children. The Heavens have not been closed after the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. He has always chosen
His prophet, to guide His people and He does the same today. Hymn # 19 is one of my favorite hymns. We are
fortunate people that we have living prophet and we know him and can follow him to receive the promised blessings.
D&C
28:1–7
clearly says that at the time of Joseph Smith, he was the only person authorized to receive the revelation
for the whole earth. Similarly, living prophet today (President Russell M. Nelson) is the only person authorized. A
person can receive the revelation for himself, his family or whatever calling he has, but not for the whole world.
1 Nephi 10:17-19
, If you are seeking questions, do not fail to seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost. Search the
scriptures and look for your questions, answers will come. Heavenly Father wants to help each one of us, He does not
want us to fail but He is not going to make life too easy for us, we need to put in our efforts. The Holy Ghost can help
us feel what is the right choice and will lead us down the right path.
Today, I know that God does reveal His will through His prophets and sometimes by personal revelations. Therefore,
we must be willing to receive His will by both mediums.

4. Synthesis:
Personal
Relevance and
Application to
the Real World
There are many serious challenges people encounter on a daily basis that are consequences
of living in a fallen world. The gospel truths taught in the Articles of Faith have tremendous
power to help people fnd answers, rise above problems, or simply feel God's love and
concern for them again.
Each week you will choose an issue (below) and think deeply about how the truths in that
week’s Article of Faith can offer hope to those who are experiencing the problem. If you
have another issue that particularly interests you, then choose your own:
abortion
abuse/bullying
addiction
depression
divorce
domestic violence
energy/environmental issues
violence
gambling
genocide
homosexuality
international terrorism
materialism
natural disasters
pornography
unemployment
poverty
racial strife/hatred
religious intolerance/persecution
threats to religious liberty
same-sex marriage
suicide
Scenario: Imagine you are speaking to someone who has experienced or has concerns about
the issue you have chosen. What would you share from the doctrine and fundamental
truths that you have studied this past week to help that person? Include why you think
these truths and doctrine are helpful and what they have meant to you. Be encouraging
with the truths you know.
Write a response in at least 300-450 words
and list your word count at the end of your
response.
5.
The world problem/issue I chose this week is:
Gambling
Response:
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is opposed to gambling, including lotteries sponsored by governments.
Church leaders have encouraged Church members to join with others in opposing the legalization and government
sponsorship of any form of gambling.
Gambling is motivated by a desire to get something for nothing. This desire is spiritually destructive. It leads
participants away from the Savior’s teachings of love and service and toward the selfshness of the adversary. It
undermines the virtues of work and thrift and the desire to give honest effort in all we do.
Those who participate in gambling soon discover the deception in the idea that they can give little or nothing and
receive something of value in return. They fnd that they give up large amounts of money, their own honor, and the
respect of family members and friends. Deceived and addicted, they often gamble with funds they should use for
other purposes, such as meeting the basic needs of their families. Gamblers sometimes become so enslaved and so
desperate to pay gambling debts that they turn to stealing, giving up their own good name. President Heber J. Grant

counseled: “The Church has been and now is unalterably opposed to gambling in any form whatever. It is opposed to
any game of chance, occupation, or so-called business, which takes money from the person who may be possessed of
it without giving value received in return. It is opposed to all practices the tendency of which is to … degrade or
weaken the high moral standard which the members of the Church, and our community at large, have always
maintained” (in Messages of the First Presidency, 5:245).
President Spencer W. Kimball said: “From the beginning we have been advised against gambling of every sort. The
deterioration and damage come to the person, whether he wins or loses, to get something for nothing, something
without effort, something without paying the full price” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1975, 6; or Ensign, May 1975, 6).
