PSY 355 Project One Template Part One: Analyzing the Socio-Psychological Foundations of Conformity 1. Describe the difference between acceptance, compliance, and obedience , and provide examples of how these concepts present within the group dynamic. Communities foster belonging by members' willingness to conform and submit. There are three approaches to integrating into the community that are described. To be accepted by one's peers, one must first overcome the pressure of others. Generally speaking, people are more likely to conform to social norms. Submit to coercion and act in a way that goes against your better judgment. Do not light up inside a restaurant that has a no smoking policy. Obedience training for your dog will last for the rest of his life. Similar applies to human beings. Standard regulations are covered, such as speed limits. New drivers are trained like pups to follow commands. 2. Describe the difference between normative influence and informational influence, and provide examples of how these concepts impact the group dynamic. Life norms and facts explain why we conform. Classic example of herd mentality normative influence: "monkey see, monkey do" These actions are meant to avert ridicule, rejection, and humiliation. Data influences judgments when context and particular are examined. Data linking the study subject's prior knowledge to their current actions and values supports these decisions. Many consider the Covid-19 vaccination a turning point in recent history. Many people consulted the internet before getting the immunization. 3. Describe why cognitive dissonance is not always easy to recognize in ourselves. 1
When I was a freshman in high school, I started smoking. Grandpa's death was caused by the smoking-related conditions of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema. Many times I have tried to quit smoking, but each time I have failed. When I feel stressed, lighting up a cigarette helps me relax. Many smokers suffer from cognitive dissonance because they are aware of the harm that smoking does to their health but nonetheless partake in the habit on a daily basis. 4. Describe ways to reduce cognitive dissonance and shift to a state of cognitive consonance in the group setting . I empathize with how you feel as someone who is also working to recover from alcoholism. It has been tremendously helpful to take part in meetings and support groups geared toward rehabilitation. It's easy to overlook the value of a diverse group of strangers coming together, sharing their stories, and learning from one another as they face the challenges of recovery. What keeps people coming back is the company of those who are really invested in their development. 5. Describe the factors that may impact a person’s ability or desire to deviate from the norm and choose not to conform to group pressure. If we go this path, we may consider the person's group treatment attendance. Rehabilitation patients are often required by law to undergo treatment. They attend group therapy because they must. Forced support group participation may not help severe withdrawal symptoms. They are stubborn and refuse to change. They enjoy their drug dependence. Part Two: Reflecting On the Conformity Experience 1. Describe the influence of unanimity on the tendency of group members to conform to the majority opinion. 2
When everyone has the same view on the problem, it's quickly solved. Every night, I have to tend to my juvenile emergency crisis shelter. My team and I take turns doing nightly duties. Dividing up an unpleasant task is something most of us can agree on doing. As a result, cutting between scenes is less jarring. To decide who leaves after the first night, we toss coins in the morning. When you win, you forfeit the right to leave early that week. When everyone is on the same page, more gets done. 2. Describe the influence of cohesion on the tendency of group members to conform to the majority opinion. When my friends and I would get together to plot an outing, my grandma would always point out that people who share common interests like to hang out together. Friends should always have each other's backs, even if that phrase sounds corny. Any plans we make to leave must be approved by everyone involved. 3. Describe the influence of status on the tendency of group members to conform to the majority opinion. As a result of my low social status and inability to follow the crowd, I often feel completely lost. Two popular girls reared a girl who was not one of the groups. The girls' extremely strong female support system was a driving force behind this shift. People from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds are more likely to change who they are to fit in with their peers. Part Three: Integrating the Negative and Positive Aspects of Conformity Within the Group Dynamic 1. Describe the negative effects of conformity on group collaboration. Include the potential impact of conformity on each of the following: A. The motivation of group members B. The identity and individuality of group members C. The perceptions of fairness toward group members D. The creativity and diversity of ideas of group members 3

By following the crowd, individuals put their uniqueness at danger. Members will have less stake in the group's success if their wants aren't met. Getting motivated might be challenging. Individuality is not valued by group members. When I think of a group where people take on the characteristics and attitudes of their peers, I picture a sorority. Decisions can't be made fairly if everyone uses the same criteria. If everybody got the same credit for their efforts, nobody would try very hard. Neither originality nor variety would thrive without it. Is everybody making an effort to blend in? In what ways are you important to us? 2. Describe the positive effects of conformity on group collaboration. Include the potential impact of conformity on each of the following: A. The cohesiveness of group members B. The intergroup harmony between group members C. The productivity level of group members D. The learning amongst group members When members of a group work together and demonstrate solidarity, everyone benefits. When there is consensus, everyone benefits. Teams may accomplish more in less time when all members have the same information. When everyone is working together, the boat moves faster. When everyone is working toward the same objective, success is inevitable. Every person in the group has something to teach the others. Observing a person as they conform to social expectations can tell you a lot about them. Finding a sense of belonging amidst a sea of like- minded people may be challenging. 3. Using the various socio-psychological concepts examined in this project to support your position, share three recommendations for optimizing the group collaboration experience. Find out what you can about the other people in the group. Even if everyone is on the same page, it still benefits the group to learn about one another's expertise and perspectives. The second piece of advise I have is to set group standards. If you really care about the group's 4
success, you'll conform to their norms. Finally, make an effort to improve relations within the team. Task allocation skills that take into account team members' abilities and weaknesses. This is useful because it provides an alternative venue for people to show off their skills. 5
