FOCAL LEARNER WORKSHEET Name: __________ Chloe Judge __________________ Pseudonym for Student: Alex Age: 7 Grade in School: 1st Strengths: List three strengths that you have observed and then explain why you consider this a strength. Strength Explanation Reading Alex loves to read and is a strong reader, in fact, he is reading above grade level. It has been fun to watch Alex, a student that struggles so hard to focus sometimes, excel in reading compared to his classmates that don’t have the same struggle. Knowledge Retention Once Alex takes on information it sticks with him. He is super bright, and I think his strong knowledge retention plays a role in the large variety of topics Alex talks about. It makes him a super interesting kid. Passionate Alex is super passionate about subjects that he is into. For example, he loves military supplies, everything tanks, guns, and army, which isn’t always school appropriate, but Alex is super passionate about the subject and knows a lot about it. He spends a lot of his free time drawing pictures of these things he is interested in, which is something I admire about him. Needs for Support: List two types of support that would help this student function most fully and be successful in the classroom where you are doing your practicum. Explain how you think the support will help the student. Type of Assistance Explanation Take a break card I think it would be super beneficial to Alex to offer him a take a break card. Sometimes he needs to let out some energy, but he just needs to learn when the appropriate time and place for that is. He will also wander off on his own sometimes if he needs a break and it can be scary. It would be better to teach Alex that it is okay to ask for a break. Fidget toys I have noticed that Alex stays on task more if he has something to fidget with at his desk. He gets distracted pretty easily, but if he has a fidget toy, it will distract him from other distractions, like someone walking in the room, and not the lesson. Universal Designs for Learning: List two Universal Designs for Learning that are or could be incorporated in your practicum classroom where your focal learner is a student. Explain in detail how the teacher is (or could be) implementing each design and how it is (or could) allow students to be more successful.
Fidget toys Fidget toys for all students that want or need them. Just make them available to students that request them as long as they don’t distract from learning. Flexible seating I think Alex and a lot of other 1 st graders would benefit from flexible seating. I remember having this in some high school classes and it helped me focus to have the option to sit in a comfortable or even stand for the class period if I wanted to after sitting all day. Learning Goal: Speak to the student’s special education teacher or IEP case manager. Describe one important learning goal that has been identified for this student for this year and describe how you have seen the student perform on this goal over the course of your practicum placement. This goal should be based on a relevant goal on the student’s IEP but do not ask the teacher to see the student’s IEP; rather, ask the special education teacher/IEP case manager to tell you one of the student’s learning goals . Learning Goal: A learning goal for Alex would be to improve executive functioning skills such as attention, impulse control, and memory through verbal reminders, modeling, and visual cues. Student Performance: Based on what I have seen from Alex, verbal reminders have worked well to keep his attention on assigned tasks. Alex is also in a social skills group where he works on impulse control by watching both the special education teacher and classmates model self-control. Visual cues, such as flashcards are also helpful in improving memory for Alex. Activity Likes and Dislikes: In what activities does this student enjoy participating? What activities does this student not enjoy? Enjoys Does Not Enjoy Alex loves gym class. He always actively participates in gym and just loves doing anything where he can be around his friends in general. He also spends most of his time in the general education classroom, so he loves coming to the special education room for social skills class. Alex also likes collecting trash at recess because he cares about the Earth which is super cute. There aren’t any activities that I noticed Alex doesn’t like. I just noticed that he doesn’t like his creativity being stifled during activities and he doesn’t like being told what to do. An example is one day I was working with the ASD students in the general ed classroom, and they were working on an activity where they were asked to write a letter on a whiteboard. Alex was doing the assigned task, but he was making bubble letters. The teacher told the class multiple times not to make bubble letters and that if they did they would have to use a piece of paper for the activity. Alex continued to make bubble letters, so his teacher told him to get a piece of paper and he continued to make bubble letters on the paper. He also was working on a color by number math sheet and did not color the shapes the right colors because he
didn’t like it with those colors.
