2 Intergenerational effects of childhood maltreatment: A systematic review of the parenting practices of adult survivors of childhood abuse, neglect, and violence Article 1 Research Question: “Does a parent’s experience of childhood maltreatment increase the risk that his or her child will also be maltreated, and thus perpetuate the harm?” (Greene,2020). Article 1 Methodological Approach: This article is a quantitative study. The learning resources state that quantitative research “often begins with a hypothesis (seeking answers from the general to the particular). Note that the number of participants is in the hundreds and that the data collection method was a survey in which respondents chose from answer options that were provided for them.” (Walden,2021). The reason being for this article being quantitative is because it emphasizes subjective data of parents who report experiencing physical abuse or witnessing violence in the home during childhood and shows how later one, they are at an increased risk for reporting or engaging in abusive or neglectful parenting. It then uses this data and correlates these testimonies to show a preputial cycle of violence within these families. The articles subjects used “ parenting assessments ranged from self-report questionnaires to observed parent-child interactions.” (Greeene,2020). Article 2 Title: Child Maltreatment Typologies and Intimate Partner Violence: Findings From a Danish National Study of Young Adults Article 2 Research Question: What types of child abuse are most linked with intimate partner violence and neglectful parenting? Article 2 Methodological Approach: This article is a quantitative study. The learning resources state that quantitative research “often begins with a hypothesis (seeking answers from the general to the particular). Note that the number of participants is in the hundreds and that the data collection method was a survey in which respondents chose from answer options that were provided for them.” (Walden,2021).
3 The article states it is done by using “ A sample of 4,718 young adults (aged 24) was randomly selected using the total birth cohort of children born in 1984. Structured interviews were conducted with 2,980 participants equating to a response rate of 63%. Childhood maltreatment including emotional, sexual, and multiple abuse experiences were used to test the association with experiencing IPV victimization. And results suggest that among the child maltreatment typologies, sexual abuse is the dominant factor associated with intimate partner violence and neglectful parenting.” (Murphy,2020).
