But what does IQ actually mean? How is it measured? Does it predict success? Explore the tabs below to learn more about the discriminatory history of IQ testing within the United States, current critiques of standardized testing, and alternative models of intelligence. Cognitive Approaches to Intelligence Testing Standardized intelligence tests tell us little about how a person answers questions and solves problems. Cognitive approaches to intelligence assume that there are MANY kinds of intelligence. Your book highlights a couple important theories: Emotional Intelligence (Mayer & Salovey, 1997) Triarchic Theory of Intelligence (Sternberg, 1988) Multiple Intelligences (Gardner, 1983) Of note, while many find theories like Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences is intuitively appealing, little empirical evidence exists to support its validity. This work has, however, led to research on learning styles, which has been foundational within educational psychology.
