The remainder of this assignment will be completed as a group and examples can be used from any member’s MVC notes. From age 0-6 months ( DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES) Neonatal reflexes : these are involuntary reactions to a particular stimulation, reflexes that are too strong or weak or absent may indicate neurological deficient. This includes stepping, Babinski, palmar grasp, Moro. Some reflexes enhance survival which includes the sucking and rooting which enable a child to feed. Physical development/domain : The baby’s physical development depends on hereditary, emotional well-being, freedom from disease and nutrition. In the early months of development the baby’s weight triples, double their height. During the first two months the baby gain ounce or 28.3 grams of weight every day till he’s of 2 months ( the head consist of ¼ of the entire body). After 2 months gain 1 lb. per month equals to .45 kgs. By the 5 th month the weight doubles as of the birth weight whereas the length increases 30 %. At first the children will learn to hold their heads up. Rapid growth in proportions of body parts can be seen in first 6 months. The tooth development occurs at the first 6 months: The first teeth appear at about 6 months. The sequence of teeth development is as follows: Lower middle upper middle lateral incisors Canines and then Molars. (a set of 20 baby teeth) The baby can see things from 8 to 12 inches away at birth, the baby’s eyes are nearsighted and the muscles are not strengthened they some times go wall-eyed. But it improves with time usually after 3 months their eye muscles gets stronger. Their gross and motors improves and they start to grab things in their surrounding and theses skills improves at 4 -5 months and they start to grab their own milk bottles at 4 months. The baby starts to flip their bodies when lay on their tummies at age of 5 months and start to make weird sounds at 4 or 5months for example making a car “wooing” sound or saying “humph” when someone calls them.
The baby can taste and smell. For example, the newborn will suck sweetened water bottle but will cry if given sour or bitter water. The baby starts to move their legs and arms together and they also try to reach their feet with their hands in order to get a sense of their own body parts. The touch is very important to the baby to give him a sense of warmness and protection and safety. He newborns prefer to listen new sounds manly to mom and dads voice because he knows where the love is coming from. At the first 6 months the baby should only be fed with breastmilk because the baby is learning about taste and texture and it will be a good source of nutrition. Pushes up when on tummy, When they sit they lean on their hands to support the body. These developments all occur in the 6 th month. Cognitive development Infants cognitive or brain development means the learning process of memory, language, thinking, and reasoning. At The age of 2 months the baby learns to look at things for several seconds and watches you as you move. The problem-solving skills of the baby starts to develop in the starting months The baby starts smiling when looking at familiar people. At the age of 4 months the baby learns to open their mouth when hungry after seeing the bottle and look at their hands interestingly. Whereas at the age of 6 months the baby starts to put things in their mouth to explore them, try to reach things and usually closes their mouth if they don’t want the food. The taste buds enhance at this age the baby starts to like the salty water and likes to try and eat new things. The baby respond at month 4 to affection, hold their head steady, like to play and babble with expression. The baby learns to pay attention to certain voices and laughs at unpredictable things and sounds the baby likes to interact with things that shines brighter than their usual surrounding. They start to laugh fully at 6 months more or less. Reacts to loud sounds and often gets frightens because of these sounds. At 5-6 months , the baby respond to their name and know familiar faces. Language Development The baby starts making sounds at 4 months or more like “oooo” or “aaah” (cooing). Turns their head when you talk towards yourself and try to say things in their own language when they get annoyed or are hungry. Gets excited when you talk and laugh looking at him and try to response by gestures. Babies starts to take turns making sounds with you. Blows (sticks out their tongue and blows) also makes squealing noises at 6 months. At 5-6 months, the baby strings vowel together when babbling (ah, eh oh)etc. Emotional Development When babies are born the only thing they know is their mother and their reflexive response to hunger. But as they develop emotionally they starts to calm down at the age of 2 months when you picks them up. Looks at your face, seems happy when you walk up on them, smiles when you talk to them. But at the age of 4 months the baby starts to smile on their own to get your attention, starts chuckling, and moves to keep your attention to himself.

At 6 months or more they start to laugh, love to look at their selves in the mirror and also gets closer with familiar people and gets comfortable around them. Health and wellbeing Newborn care is critical. They should be provided with thermal protection sanitary umbilical cord and skin care; early and exclusive breast feeding (for immunization BCG, Hepatitis B, Vitamin K and ocular prophylaxis). During or before pregnancy there are some measures that the mother should took in order to keep the baby healthy. For example, getting vaccinated. There are some time periods during when a mother should get her vaccines: Before pregnancy: MMR Vaccine During pregnancy: Tdap vaccine and Flu vaccine After birth its safer to give the baby the first shot of Hepatitis B (HEP B) 1 st dose. From month 1-2, the baby should receive the following vaccines Hepatitis B 2 nd dose Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis) 1 st dose Hemophilus influenza type B Disease 1 st dose Polio 1 st dose Pneumococcal disease 1 st dose Retrovirus RV 1 st dose The vaccines at the age of 3-4 months should be: Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis) 2 nd dose Hemophilus influenza type B Disease 2 nd dose Polio 2 nd dose Pneumococcal disease 2 nd dose Retrovirus RV 2 nd dose Vaccines at the age of 5-6 months should be : Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis) 3 rd dose Hemophilus influenza type B Disease 3 rd dose Polio 3 rd dose Pneumococcal disease 3 rd dose, Retrovirus RV 3 rd dose and Influenza flu (every year) The risk factors to the baby’s health can be prone and side sleeping, soft bedding, bed sharing, improper sleep surfaces, cigarette smoke exposure and prematurity. The preventive variables include nursing, pacifier, usage, room sharing and vaccinations. The process of sensorimotor development, habituation and perception of the baby are the most highly developing senses with the developmental milestones in the baby. Here are the most basic developments during the month0-6: Initial month : The baby's weight may dip after birth, but it will come back. Reflex actions include hand, arm, leg, and rooting motions. If the head is not supported, it flops, the eyes are focused at 18 to 45 cm, and it stares at things and patterns with great contrast but doesn't reach out to touch them. The loudness startles the mother's voice.
Next month : When resting on one's stomach, the muscles begin to relax and twitch less, lifting the head around 45 degrees. The hands also begin to open up and may briefly reach out to grasp an item. Eyes monitor closely moving things and move in synchrony, yet they may only roll in one direction. Third month: stretches out arms and legs , rolls over from back to side , holds head up to search for sounds and movement , discovers feet and hands , holds objects longer , swipes with arms , briefly bears weight on legs , responds to detailed, high contrast objects , cuts first tooth (third to sixth month or later). Month four : Rolls from side to side, elevates head about 90 degrees, stands up and holds weight with assistance, sits with arms elevated, reaches for items, and clasps hands. Month five: flips over from front to back, grabbing toes and moving forward on the floor while aiming well, moves items from one hand to another Month six: retains head stable, sits with back straight when propelled, and grasps and examines tiny items, recognizes that items may be tucked behind one another and rolls in both directions. o
