Topic Interest Mental illness among African Americans is a topic of great interest to me as it is a critical issue affecting a significant portion of the population. To be more specific I want to research mental illness among African Americans, barriers, stigma, and access to treatment. The topic is particularly important to the field of mental health as it highlights the need to address the unique challenges faced by African Americans in accessing and receiving appropriate mental health care. Importance to the Discipline In the discipline of mental health, this topic is relevant because it has been widely recognized that African Americans face significant barriers to accessing mental health services. These barriers include stigma, discrimination, a lack of culturally competent care, and systemic racism (Bhui, et al., 2018). Additionally, African Americans in the United States have a greater burden of mental illness and lower rates of treatment than any other racial/ethnic group (Kaur, et al., 2016). Taking steps to address these disparities in mental health care is a critical priority for the discipline of mental health and has the potential to improve outcomes for African Americans and society at large. Contribution to positive social change The topic of mental illness among African Americans shows promise of making a meaningful contribution to positive social change. A positive change in the mental health care landscape for African Americans can be achieved by increasing awareness, addressing stigma, and improving access to care. Accessing and receiving appropriate mental health care can also be a challenge for African Americans. Effective interventions and policies can also help address this issue. By
doing so, we could achieve better mental health outcomes, reduce health disparities, and create a more equitable society (Misra, et al., 2021). Referencs: Bhui, K., Halvorsrud, K., & Nazroo, J.
