Wk. 3 Discussion Most of your education has been based in linear (cause and effect) thinking, also known as the scientific method . Based on your readings this week, how does the field of marriage and family therapy differ? What strengths do you have that will benefit you in learning to think systemically? What are some challenges you foresee? MFT has many causes and effects when it comes to the approach that is taken. MFT has a more systemic approach that consists with the interaction of the client. It is like problem solving, you must understand how to think outside the box. A MFT must learn and listen from the perspective of others themselves. MFT must learn how to connect and communicate if they are facing compelling arguments from the client. MFT have many techniques that will help their clients communicate and have a better relationship. Likewise, Minuchin influenced Haley with his applications of structure and function. With each refinement came different perspectives about the role and responsibility of the therapist. Haley’s unique integration of these influences resulted in a model that conceptualized the family in terms of organization but emphasized an unwavering focus on the presenting problem. For Haley, all therapeutic interactions should relate directly to the presenting problem. Otherwise, they are irrelevant (Simon, 1992). Like Erickson, strategic family therapists emphasize a unique approach or strategy for each presenting problem (Hanna, 2019). In all the theories it had a lot of information to process, but help the therapist have a baseline with the client so it will be improvement in the relationship and see the overall growth in the client
