What I Say Versus What I Do Essay Shannon Leveille 02/13/2023 PSYC 101
Social Psychology tells us that when our behavior changes from standing up for something we say we believe in, because of the pressure of others becoming too great, it is known as social influence. When discussing social influence and our behaviors, it can cover many different things including conformity, compliance, and obedience. Conformity is when we have changes in our behavior due to unspoken group pressures. It pretty much is when one is “following the crowd” or being what some may call a “follower” instead of a leader. Conformity is something we all have or will experience in our lifetime. Then we have compliance, which is a little different because it is when one changes their behavior because someone else has specifically asked them for something or made a communicated request. It can be a direct question, a gesture, or even a unspoken request when it comes to this, even something as simple as “bring me a glass of water.” Lastly we have obedience, which is somewhat like compliance, but still different at the same time. It is when there is a change in ones behavior due to a direct request from someone that has authority over you. It can come from anyone who is authorized to execute rewards or punishments if you do or don’t comply with what is asked of you. Also in social psychology, there are intra- and interper- sonal levels that are studied. Intrapersonal topics (they pertain to an individual) include emotions and attitudes, the self, and the social cognition (the ways we think about ourselves and others). Interpersonal topics (those that
pertain to groups) include helping behavior, aggression, prejudice and discrimination, attraction and close relationships, group processes and intergroup relationships. It focuses on how people construe or interpret situations and how the interpretations influence their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Social psychology uses self-report measures which are measures in which individuals are asked to respond to questions posed by an interviewer or on a questionnaire. Researchers find this to be a very inexpensive way to be able to test more subjects and also be able to obtain the results even quicker than other methods too. We all know that the Lord will never give us more than we can handle, because he knows how we feel, what we think, and what hurts us at all times. Which is why I think that most of the time when we do something different rather than what we think we would in a situation, it is because the Lord guiding us to do what’s best for our life at that time. So in those times, we must trust him and let him guide us down the right paths for our life. If we look at Proverbs 3:5-6, “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your path straight.” George et al. Introduction to Psychology from a Christian Worldview. The Holy Bible. (ESV). 2001. Proverbs 3:5-6.
