PSY 328 Project Two Milestone Template To begin your milestone, you will first select one of the professions from the list provided. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Your responses should each be about 3 to 5 sentences in length. Review the example responses in the assignment guidelines and rubric document to help you get started. Professions : Doctor Nurse Mental health professional * Teacher Customer service representative Political figure Business owner Police officer 1. Personality and the Individual A. Identify one trait from the Big Five (openness, also known as intellect/imagination; conscientiousness; extraversion; agreeableness; or neuroticism, also known as emotional stability) of your choice that you think is particularly important for your selected profession and justify your response. One trait from the Big Five that is important for a mental health professional is emotional stability. This is an important trait because as a mental health professional, is expect that the individual would be able to assist in helping others regulate and manage their emotions and that cannot be done if they are in a neurotic state. B. Describe whether it would be most ideal for your selected professional to be low, high, or mixed for the Big Five trait you identified for most situations and justify your response. I believe it is most ideal for mental health professionals to be high in the Big Five trait, emotional stability. This is because someone who is highly functioning when it comes to emotional stability because it allows for the person to recognize situations in their entirety rather than letting their own emotions of biases take control. When a person can take their emotions out of a situation and look at it in its whole, they are able to find solutions that otherwise would not possible. While being able to recognize the emotions in others is very helpful as a mental health professional, it is equally important for them to be able to recognize and tend to their own needs and emotions. This is to help prevent them form becoming burnout. C. Explain whether you think the effectiveness of the Big Five trait you selected depends on the situation . To justify your response, provide a real or imagined example where the trait would benefit the professional and an example where the same trait would not benefit the professional. I do believe that the effectiveness of emotional stability does depend on the situation. It is harder to relate to others when you give off the impression that you have everything put together. It is also hard to 1
understand someone rock bottom or why they felt like they had to make the decisions they made when faced with obstacles or hardships. Sometimes our emotions must be allowed freedom to feel how they are feeling without worrying about having it all put together. This is how the mental health professional not only grows but inspires as well. It adds a level of transparency which is needed when people are being emotionally vulnerable. 2. Personality and Teams A. Identify another trait from the Big Five for your selected profession and describe how scoring low, high, or mixed on that trait might influence how that professional conducts their work or interacts with others. Another trait from the Big Five that might influence how a mental health professional conduct their work and interacts with other is conscientiousness. People with high conscientiousness tends to be reliable with a high level of self-control. These are skills that are important to have as a mental health professional because to build a relationship with someone who has trust issues, that individual should be a consistent in their client’s life as well as trustworthy. The client should be able to trust that their mental health specialist is going to create and help them follow throw with treatment. They should be able to trust that their privacy isn’t going to be violated or that they aren’t going to have to constantly switch between providers. B. Explain whether you think it is better to have a diversity of traits within the same profession or among professionals with the same role or whether it is better for the professionals to exhibit the same traits. Justify your response. I do think it is better to have a diversity of traits within the same professions because it allows for different perspectives to come together. In the Disney movie, INSIDE OUT, the emotion, happiness, believed it was the most important emotions, which most people tend to believe. Everyone wants to be happy. However, Happiness ended up shunning Sadness because she felt that sadness was not a good emotion for the human body. In the end, we learned that sadness is needed to help signal that we need help. This is true in all areas of life. It is important to have a different array of emotions to help balance out an environment. 3. Personality, Stress, and Coping A. Describe how you would expect your selected professional to cope with stress using a trait you identified previously or a new trait of your choosing. When faced with stress, I would expect a mental health professional to first be able to identify that they are stressed and then do the internal work to identify why they are stressed. They should be able to utilize the tools they have to ask for help if it’s needed or to communicate what they need to move forward. It is important that they don’t misplace their stress or frustration out on things that have no relation to their trigger. This would be a mental health professional who scores high on emotional stability. B. Explain what kind of support you would expect from a person in this profession if you were seeking help or advice. Consider how much emotional intelligence you might expect your selected professional to display. 2
I would expect a mental health professional to be able to help me find ways to regulate my emotions in stressful situations. I would expect that they would have resources if needed and would be able to talk me out of a crisis. I would also expect them to be honest with me, even if I don’t like the outcome, because I will develop the tools to get through it. 3
