AB541: Concepts & Principles II Reading Check (5 pts) Unit 6 Student: Crishtine Sundar Readings: Kestner, et al. (2018) Kestner, Redner, Watkins, & Poling (2015) Nevin & Shahan (2011) Lattal, Cancado, Cook, et al. (2017 Instructions: Answer each question based on the assigned reading in your own words. The purpose of this is to think about the purpose of the reading, rather than to regurgitate a summary. Kestner, et al. (2018) & Kestner, Redner, Watkins, & Poling (2015) 1. Compare the findings of these two studies (i.e. what did they study, what were the results, and were they consistent or differing). (2 pts) The study by Kestner et al. 2015 studied resurgence in lab rats with different punishment strategies. They identified that through punishment and extinction of unwanted or inappropriate responding behavior, you are able to reduce the resurgence of that particular unwanted behavior and it can be utilized in applied settings to help deal with resurgence. The study by Kestner et al. 2018 researched a human-operant procedure which compared resurgence when followed by a DRA that had extinction and a DRA that had both extinction and a response cost. The study results indicated that no matter the arrangement a comparable level of resurgence followed both DRA with extinction or DRA with extinction and response cost. Kestner et al. 2015 reported that punishment such as the form of faradic punishment was able to lower the rates of resurgence of inappropriate behaviors, they did note however that with human subject, lesser forms of punishment such as verbal reprimands and response cost should be used. Kestner et al. 2018 reported that despite the results indicating that punishment might not be a great
AB541: Concepts & Principles II Reading Check (5 pts) Unit 6 Student: Crishtine Sundar resurgence deterrent, response cost however should be kept on as a modal towards subduing imminently threatful behavior. Nevin & Shahan (2011) 1. What do the authors suggest are the effects of alternative reinforcement on the persistence of behaviors? (1 pt) The authors state that although there persists an advantage of alternative reinforcement lowering the rates of problem behavior exhibited, it also increased the resistance of the behavior towards extinction. The persistence of the targeted response then in this situation would be high. Lattal, Cancado, Cook, et al. (2017) 1. State what the authors identify as issues with previous definitions of resurgence. (1 pt). The researchers Lattal et al. 2017 take up issue with the definition of resurgence in previous studies not being able to indicate the role stimulus variable play in resurgence. They also state that magnitude and time course both within and across the sessions are not accounted for, as well as their behavioral baseline association. There is little indication of behavior being the measure in the definitions. They also state that the target response in the previous definitions all state that it is established in an organism repertoire at a prior, but they do not state the conditions of establishing said repertoire or the prior time as well. As such previously unreinforced responses that show increases are also excluded.
