TOPIC ESSAY IS EXCESSIVE SOCIAL MEDIA USE A FORM OF NARCISSISM? What do I see on social media: more self-promoting? More connecting? HOW DOES THIS TOPIC APPLY TO PSYCHOLOGY? More effort to self-promote – Psychology helps understand that individuals who engaged in consistent patterns of behavior, thoughts, and emotions tied to their social media use, them likely have certain traits like narcissism. More effort to connect on Facebook – Maslow hierarchy of needs, people re trying to fulfill their need for love and belonging as well as self- esteem needs. For both: Learning by operant conditioning and reinforcement of social media use occurs through what? Positive reinforcement for social media use? Likes comments, followers, etc. What would be negative reinforcement? Someone seeing your post and doing a task or chore for you. What would punishment be? Trolling, unfriending, lack of interactions, etc. HOW DO CIVIL AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY APPLY TO THIS CONTROVERSY? Is this bad? Not necessarily? In each instance, there might be people who need to express their personality this way, or based on geographical location, need to connect with others this way. When might this become problematic? When social interaction via social media leads to isolation? This might lead to a lack of getting other needs met outside the cyber world? Limitation of view and understanding that there are others in the world. If an individual start perceiving themselves sin the outgroup and different from everyone they might forget that they are not alone and that can lead bad outcomes. Narcissism: everything becomes dependent on likes comments, etc. Your self-worth becomes based solely on virtual image. What”s the solution? HOW DOES SCIENTIFIC REASONING APPLY TOTHIS CONTROVERSY? Understand and using scientific reasoning can help us cut through the crap.
