"The VARK Questionnaire" Melissa Cantu RN-BSN NRS429 Professor Lori Jerina January 22, 2023
According to the Vark Questionnaire I am a kinesthetic learning. I learn by examples, case studies, trial and error, senses, and practical exercises. When a person with a kinesthetic preference they normally prefer autobiographies, demonstrations applying what we have learned, experiences, team work, problem solving and much more. Kinesthetic learners use all the senses such as sight, tough, taste, smell, and hearing. Kinesthetic learners like myself uses hands-on approaches and tend to learn better by trial and error. Everyone learns differently. People can be kinesthetic learners, visual learners, aural learners, or read/write learners. Some people are more than one. I find myself very true to kinesthetic learners. I tend to recall past things that have happened to apply it to a new situation. I take pride in finishing tasks and seeing measurable outcomes. I am a big team player but I get very discouraged when people slack off and get the full credit. I am one that likes to know when they are doing a good job or when there is learning to be done or things, I am slacking in. That’s my trial and error, I will do something and then ask what did I forget or what should I have done differently. I am one that needs to know the procedure, then see the procedure be done, then I will do it myself. I will always look for opportunities to practice something new I have learned or to teach it to others. I tend to not really grasp things until I have experienced it myself, either with a patient or doctor etc. I link patients and symptoms to diagnosis. Kinesthetic learners are true leaders. They are the ones that lead and tell everyone to come watch us grow. Many people learn different ways and probably many different ways for one person. When it comes to teaching and learning not everyone is the same and even if they are kinesthetic learners doesn’t mean everything, they know was taught that way, they might retain
the information better a different way. When I teach, I teach several different ways because I am the same way. I do not learn everything through kinesthetic learning, I also learn through visual, aural, and read/write. Some things I need to read to learn it, some I need to see it, and honestly some I just need to try it and make corrections from there. So, when teaching patients, I try different ways each time to help them understand. I could start with a brochure and verbal, then come back and show them, then come back and have them show me. Learning about the different types of learning does open my eye and change my perceptions of teaching to my patients because people can literally learn through everything or nothing at all. I say I have scatter brain because I learn and teach many different ways. When I go to teach my patients, I will now see how they learn the best, so I can start with teaching the way they think they will learn the best. This will help because sometimes we don’t get much time in for teaching. Behavioral changes can be affected by learning styles because a patient can feel let down because they are not learning something and become agitated and irritated and not want to learn all because of our way of teaching isn’t their way of learning. When this being said know how a patient might learn will be crucial to help them be successful in learning. Something many of us educators probably don’t realize is just because we learn one way doesn’t mean our ill patients will learn the same. We must be patient and try different ways of teaching in order to get our patients to learn and retain the information to have a positive outcome and discharge. Many patients probable feel discouraged when we know about a diagnosis and are trying to teach them, but they are not comprehending the information, but in reality, it’s not their fault its ours as their teacher. It’s our responsibility to try and educate them the best we can so they will actually learn the information, and sometimes that means we have to learn to be different teachers. This is why teaching patients every chance you get helps and

also every nurse that teaches, teaches differently which will help the patient learn the same things but differently which might help them retain it better. When going about teaching seeing what the patient already knows will help you see how they are trying to teach you when knowledge they already have, which in return will show you how they could possibly learn as well. This assignment really opened my eyes in the way I teach my patients.
