Sophia Portfolio Part:1 Brandon Thomas The University of Arizona Global Campus ECE 205: Introduction to Child Development Instructor: Katelyn Sprouse Date: 20 November 2023
Observation Name of Child Observed : Sophia Date Observation Completed: 16 November 2023 1. Summarize three key take-aways from the observation you conducted this week. “Children benefit most when teachers engage in stimulating interactions that support learning and are emotionally supportive. Interactions that help children acquire new knowledge and skills provide input to children, elicit verbal responses and reactions from them, and foster engagement in and enjoyment of learning.” (Yoshikawa et al. 2013) The observation video was amongst two personnel, one being an older female while the secondary being a young infant; “Sophia”. Based in the video the location of the setting appears to be at place of residency either home daycare or personal home with the female being a parent. Notable things in the background gave me the consensus that this is an home based center which allows more of a closer bond between the teacher and caregiver due to the social interaction they exhibited through-out the video. Interesting things that grab my attention was the fact the home wasn’t safeguarded for children. What appears to be a table not equipped with edge bumpers or corner guards for pointy surfaces to prevent injuries especially for an infant was a concern for me. Additionally, recognizing an item not clearly identifiable on the floor surface was alarming due to the child has the opportunity to procure it and becoming and ingestible item. However the home daycare provides more of a personal/intimate relationship for Sophia through individualize attention from the care provided. After viewing the video there’s not much I would recommend changing due to the fact I think individual attention and guidance for Sophia gives her more time from the care provider instead of having attention divided amongst a group of children. 2. Discuss two developmentally appropriate activities to incorporate in the classroom. 1. Child development is the dynamic process of children acquiring increasingly more complex motor, cognition, communication, social–emotional, and self-help skills from the stage of
conception through adolescence. (Groark, et. al., 2023) Providing the child with the opportunity that focus on the development of social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth while within the classroom would benefit them throughout their childhood. Sophia exhibited social-emotional development in the infancy stage with various emotions to include smiling and laughing, excitement (by the random arm flailing), and the anticipation of imitation from the caregiver. Play-based activities that contributed to Sophia’s growth are witness in the video by the caregiver and infant mimicking responses like laugher as well as the attempt to mimic physical clapping. The activity was executed several times and each time Sophia was interested by reciprocating burst of laughter and uncontrollable body movements each time. The caregiver narrates her actions utilizing body motion and verbal tones displaying various emotional levels of energy. They express themselves with even more sounds than in the first 3 months by adding babbling and gurgling sounds. They begin to laugh out loud and babble in response to emotions like being excited (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2013; National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders [NIDCD], 2010).” 2. Cognition includes skills related to thinking, learning, understanding, information processing, reasoning, problem-solving, imagination, and memory development. (Groark, et. al., 2023)” Sophia displayed cognition milestones for the infancy stage that focus more on the exploration of senses and body movement. Sophia was able to detect sound difference with pitch and volume amongst the caregiver and herself. Additionally, the ability to utilize facial expressions to respond to her caregivers and attempt to imitate the ability to clap. 3. Describe how you would use one topic from the Infants and Toddlers Virtual Lab to further support the needs or strengths of this student. Viewing the “Infants and Toddlers Virtual Lab” my topic of choice to further support Sophia’s needs or strengths would be Learning Environment. “Children’s motivation to learn is increased when their learning environment fosters their sense of belonging, purpose, and agency. Curricula and teaching methods build on each child’s assets by connecting their experiences in the school or

learning environment to their home and community settings. (Groark, et. al., 2023)” Achievable aspect to Sophia support for development would be to create an environment that facilitates positive relationship to include nurturing and togetherness. Encouraging the interaction from both parents would help further the planning process for Sophia and allow the caregiver to focus on supporting the individualizing needs of Sophia. Ensuring the environment for Sophia is healthy and safe for free exploration within the environment, which influences her development with her sense. This is also beneficial to the caregiver due to the fact it allows you to pay more attention to Sophia interactions and allows independency by allowing free movement. “A healthy environment decreases the possibility of contracting and spreading illness and enhances infants’ and toddlers’ overall well-being (Lally, Stewart, & Greenwald, 2009).” Allowing Sophia to have multiple choices within her environment encourages interested, happiness, and engagement throughout the day by exploring various age-appropriate material and locations within center. Different organized spaces for Sophia could help promote growth by different levels based on milestone of development. 4. Describe two elements from a learning environment and how they nurture the physical, socio- emotional, language, or cognitive milestones of this child. 1. Pushing or riding wheeled; “ Outdoor learning environments should be designed with the same intentionality as indoor learning environments. They should inspire and motivate all learners, and must accommodate the needs of young infants, crawling infants, beginning walkers, and active climbers (Virtual Lab School. (n.d.) . The ability to utilize objects with wheels gives children the social interaction of peer to peer contact and establishes group play. Having the ability to become more mobile allows the child to explore and develop a sense of independency. Pushing to toys allows contribute to the development milestone like impacting smaller toys supporting fine motor skills like the wrist and hand, however larger toys contribute to larger muscle groups that influences gross motor skills. The ability to push toys with wheels also
promotes how effective the child shifts weight while using the toy. Ideally the encouragement to used small and larger muscles through physical motion to promote the child to walk. 2. Places for Group Experiences; “Caregivers can also lead infants and toddlers in songs with corresponding motions that can help develop motor skills and awareness of the sounds and patterns of language (Lang et al., 2010).” Paly group also contributes to the children learning about their surroundings while making friends and developing social skills. Play group can support the children’s imagination and creativity by allowing them to play in an unstructured way. In the video with Sophia the encouragement from the caregiver allowed the ability for physical activity like singing and clapping which provide pivotal due the fact she tried to imitate her which led to a variety of activities. 5. Explain why family involvement is important at this stage of development. Family involvement gives a sense of unity and comfortability between the caregiver and child. By being involved with the teachings of the child the parent can establish a connection between schools and home; promoting support with lessons. Situation awareness is noticeable at the younger age and by displaying interest in the learning of children shows that we value their education. In the event with Sophia her ability to attach to the caregiver or family member shows a sense of trust and will result in better interaction with outers. Establishing and teaching developmental skills help establishes a sense of security that promotes the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and life for families.
