Psychological Science Response Sasha Pinkstock Ohio Christian University PSY1020: Introduction to Psychology Megan Baril November 13 th , 2023
Psychological Science Response Jenny has good intentions for her daughter, but does she have factual evidence to prove her reasoning? In Jenny’s case, she assumes that children who go to preschool will be more likely to attend college—as a critical thinker, asking questions such as: How do they know that? How do we know one event caused another? How else could we explain things? Psychology in Everyday Life states, “critical thinking requires checking assumptions, weighing evidence, inviting criticism, and testing conclusions.” (Myers & Dewall, 2023). While early learning does pave the way for children’s success in future academic settings, there may be many contributing factors, such as socioeconomic status and parental education levels. Despite not having access to early learning programs, some children still succeed academically. Children with parents with access to quality k-12 education and valuable resources, such as extracurricular activities and private tutoring, can enhance their academic success. Improved healthcare and nutrition can also facilitate accelerated cognitive development and academic achievements. I am afraid I must disagree with Jenny and her beliefs. Just because two events occur together does not mean that one caused the other to happen. As humans, we are wired to make connections and seek patterns, leading us to oversimplify complex issues based on limited information. One example is when I would pull an all-nighter studying for my tests. If I received a good grade, it automatically meant that staying up all night studying was the key to my success. However, further reflection would show that this is not the case.
