Professor Jones College 1H Research Response Choose two sources (one article from a PCC Library database and one website found via Google search) that you personally found in Step 3: Finding & Evaluating Sources. Each member of your group should choose different sources for this assignment. As you read your sources, annotate, clarify, or engage with the text in your own style. Take note of key passages and facts, and factors that help you assess the credibility of the article or that cause confusion. Observe your reading process closely and take note of any ways you try to solve problems that you encounter while reading. After you finish reading the sources, complete the following Research Response. Follow these directions carefully as they help you learn about the research process. 1. Search Process : For each of the two sources , please complete the following: Article: The impact of parental trauma, parenting difficulty, and planned family separation on the behavioral health of West African immigrant children in New York City. Describe how you found the source, and why you decided to choose it for this assignment. How long did it take? I found this source through the EBSCOhost database. It didn’t take me that long thanks to already knowing what I was looking for. I decided to use this article, focusing on the parent’s perspective, in relation to how parenting is affected by intergenerational trauma. Which library database did you utilize, and how easy or challenging was it to navigate? I used EBSCOhost, and it was pretty easy to navigate through it and find the article. Which keywords (search terms) were helpful, and which were dead ends? I looked up intergenerational trauma and parenting. A lot of good articles came up for each search so I didn’t really face those dead ends How did you overcome obstacles (too many articles, irrelevant search results, not knowing your next step)? I looked at the abstract to make sure that the research aligned with my research question. In addition, I looked at the other keywords used in the article to evaluate its relevance, and it helps with expanding my research.
Article: Intergenerational Trauma: 6 Ways It Affects Families Describe how you found the source, and why you decided to choose it for this assignment. How long did it take? I found this source on Google. It also wasn’t a long process, it was a really simple one, also because I was pretty specific with my search. I chose this article for my assignment because it focuses on how family dynamics are affected by intergenerational trauma. Which library database did you utilize, and how easy or challenging was it to navigate? I didn’t use the library database for this source, it was a Google search. It was easy to navigate. Which keywords (search terms) were helpful, and which were dead ends? I used intergenerational trauma and families, which were both helpful. How did you overcome obstacles (too many articles, irrelevant search results, not knowing your next step)? I read the title and the introduction paragraph to see how relevant the article was to my research, all my searches were planned. My group made it easier in dividing subtopics of our general topic, which narrows the search. 2. Reading Process: Narrate your reading process once you found the sources. How did you approach your reading of this article and website? I started off by reading the abstract or introduction of each just to not waste time in reading the entire article to confirm that it’s relevant to my topic. Then I did a command search to look where my keywords were used specifically and made note to pay attention specifically to those paragraphs and search for evidence that supports my argument. What steps did you take to gain understanding? I made notes on a separate document and sorted the information out in their own categories to stay organized. I summarized my articles into one detailed paragraph, almost my version of an abstract. Which source did you find more accessible and engaging? I found the source dealing with the parent’s perspective of intergenerational trauma. As someone living in a family where generations are now clashing, I feel like this was very important to include in my research, to get a more broader and complete base to base my
conclusions, or analysis. Explain what you did when things got difficult for you. Be sure to also include any successes that you experienced that helped you see how your reading problem-solving skills have developed. Searching for more keywords to use to expand on the issue was probably the most challenging. Finding ways to word my questions was also challenging, it was probably the longest part of my process. 3. Evaluation: For each of the two sources, please complete the following : Article: The impact of parental trauma, parenting difficulty, and planned family separation on the behavioral health of West African immigrant children in New York City. Assess the credibility / reliability of each source using the criteria you learned about in the Source Evaluation video Links to an external site. (purpose, authority, scope, accuracy, currency, and objectivity). Who is the author and what about her/his experience is noteworthy? (You might have to use Google to learn a little bit more about the author!) The author herself is trustworthy. Ujunwa Anakwneze received her education at Harvard University in Sociology and Psychology. She was part of the University of Fordham when she wrote this article. Why was this source created? The source was created as part of Anakwneze’s criteria in Fordham University. It was part of an experiment of analyzing the intergenerational trauma within African American populations who immigrated from West Africa. Does the source include data or evidence to back up claims? When was the source published or updated? The source was published and reviewed by Fordham University. It was published recently, around May of 2021. Does the author show bias, use strong language or present only one side of the facts/issues? The author doesn’t show any form of bias in her article. She addresses her topics in a formal way, with the purpose of informing her audience and presenting what she has found, on the

topic of intergenerational trauma. Article: Intergenerational Trauma: 6 Ways It Affects Families Assess the credibility / reliability of each source using the criteria you learned about in the Source Evaluation video Links to an external site. (purpose, authority, scope, accuracy, currency, and objectivity). Who is the author and what about her/his experience is noteworthy? (You might have to use Google to learn a little bit more about the author!) While the article was published through Duke University, the authors of the article were Gina Ryder, and Taneasha White. Gina Ryder is a journalist and educator who focuses on the topics of trauma, substance use, mental health, and what it means to heal. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian, Reader’s Digest, Glamour, and many other outlets. Taneasha White is a graduate of English and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. The article itself was reviewed by Michael Boland Ph.D, who is a licensed clinical psychologist who conducts structured assessment and psychotherapy with medical patients and mental health consumers in Reno, Nevada. He also conducts original research on posttraumatic stress and emotional regulation in clinical disorders, and he teaches university courses on related topics. Why was this source created? The source was ultimately created to bring awareness to the growing issue of intergenerational trauma and the effects within a family, mostly focusing on mental health. Does the source include data or evidence to back up claims? When was the source published or updated? The source does include evidence to support the claims being made. The source itself was published on April 15, 2021. Does the author show bias, use strong language or present only one side of the facts/issues? No, it's not biased, it shows both sides of how intergenerational trauma can either bring families closer or break them apart. The language may be a bit informal, only because they are addressing the common public, not the scholar population.
4. Summary: For each of the two sources , please complete the following: Write a 2-3 sentence summary. What did you learn? What are the most interesting and relevant takeaways from each source? This study examined the relationships among parental trauma, parenting difficulty, duration of planned family separation, and child externalizing behavior in an archival dataset of West African voluntary and forced immigrants in New York City. The findings suggested that children of immigrants recovering from trauma are at risk of exhibiting behavioral symptoms and highlight a potential intervention target for improving child outcomes in immigrant families. The most interesting thing was that PTSD played a role in the trauma experienced by immigrants. I can visualize and understand anxiety being a part of immigration but not PTSD. Make note of at least one specific piece of evidence (quote, statistic, example, etc.) that you would consider incorporating into your final research project. This information should directly address your research question and strengthen your group's main claim (thesis). The question we chose to focus on is “ How does the “American Dream” impact immigrants and their families? does it still exist once they have come to the United States?” One of the problems that exist after immigration or while pursuing the American Dream is intergenerational trauma. In this article it highlights the parent’s view. This is useful because we get the perspective of the people who did experience the challenges moving away from their country, and they were raised with different values. It’s interesting to see the effect of trauma play once the kids have grown up and reveal themselves to be influenced by the modern values, and issues happening in their generation. One piece of evidence that could be useful is bringing up PTSD for immigrant parents and child anxiety. It reveals something that goes unnoticed which is how much psychological stress and damage migrating can cause for both parents and children. Article: Intergenerational Trauma: 6 Ways It Affects Families Write a 2-3 sentence summary. What did you learn? What are the most interesting and relevant takeaways from each source? The article addresses historical intergenerational trauma, and uses events such as Japanese
internment camps, and the civil rights movement as it also addresses marginalized groups. This explanation ties into the passing down of the trauma which can be transmitted genetically or at a simple conversation, the slightest of exposures. It causes families to distance themselves, lose connection and unity, denial, and abuse. The most interesting thing I found was how an individual’s health can also be affected by trauma, or bearing so much trauma. Make note of at least one specific piece of evidence (quote, statistic, example, etc.) that you would consider incorporating into your final research project. This information should directly address your research question and strengthen your group's main claim (thesis). Something I’d like to include in my portion of the research is the aspect of historical intergenerational trauma and how it’s passed down to future generations even though they weren’t directly affected by it. This ties into the thesis because it also goes in depth of my general subtopic of generational trauma.
