Hello Class, The three most common disability categories are Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Emotional Disturbance. Each of these categories have certain accommodations and modifications that a student may need in general education classrooms. Students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) often struggle with subjects such as math, writing and reading (Scanlon, 2013). Accommodations for these students could be allowing them to have extended time for tests and assignments which will help them process the information at their own pace. Students could also use tools like speech-to-text assistive technology to help with their writing tasks. Teachers can also modify their teaching methods to better suit the student’s different learning style. Teachers have the ability to adjust their rubric when grading to base it on a student's individual education plan (IEP). Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have difficulties with communication and social interaction between peers (Iovannone, 2003). Accommodations for these students could include a detailed visual schedule on their desk to show what is going to be done each day. This will help reduce anxiety by giving the student something to focus on. Proving clear and concise instructions will also help students stay on task and better understand the tasks being asked of them. Students with Emotional Disturbance often struggle with being able to regulate their behavior and emotions (Handwerk, 1998). Accommodations for these students may include sitting near the front of the classroom near the teacher to help minimize distractions and being in close proximity to support from the teacher. Teachers can provide regular feedback and check-ins to help students understand their progression and which areas need improvement. Each of these disability categories comes with their challenges, but with the right training and resources, can be overcome and students will be able to thrive. Handwerk, M. L., & Marshall, R. M.
