SMART Goals for Success Melanie Somppi Department of Psychology, University of Phoenix PSY 599: Foundations of Graduate Study in Psychology Dr. Natasha Chung September 18, 2023
Introduction Success tends to mean something different for different people, but possessing goals to reach one’s idea of success is generally universal. There are a plethora of methods that one can utilize while attempting to achieve their goals for success. But for the purposes of this paper, we will be discussing what SMART goals are and subsequently applying this method to three of my current goals to further my success in life. SMART Goals The word SMART from SMART goals is actually used as an acronym in this case. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound all combined by the first letter of each word gives us the apt title, SMART (Mind Tools Content Team). By using this SMART goals method, you will have a more clear and concise idea of what your goals are. In the article, SMART Goals: How to Make Your Goals Achievable , the authors attribute questions to each piece of criteria of a SMART goal: Specific: What will you achieve? What will you do? Measurable: What data will you use to decide whether you’ve met the goal? Achievable: Are you sure you can do this? Do you have the right skills and resources? Relevant: Does the goal align with those of your team or organization? How will the result matter? Time-bound: What is the deadline for accomplishing the goal? In the same article there are also less formal questions presented to help one truly create SMART goals, for example the five ‘W’ questions: who, what, when, where, and why in regards to making a specific goal. The SMART goals method aims to eliminate disorganization, cease
procrastination, and most importantly does away with unattainable goals. Once you can successfully record your answers to these questions, you can begin working towards your goal in a much more productive and precise manner. Application of SMART Goals Method The three goals of mine that I will be applying to the SMART goals method are to find a job that will utilize my bachelor’s degree in psychology, to better manage my mental illness, and to start receiving food stamps and subsidized daycare through the state. I will first discuss how I ensured that each of these goals meet the criteria of SMART goals and then explain how they will help me to further achieve success in my career and personal life. My first goal, finding a job that will utilize my bachelor’s degree in psychology, can be considered specific because I have a clear desire to find new employment at a place that is mental health or psychology focused. I will know that my goal has been met when I give my current employer my two weeks notice and subsequently start a new position elsewhere (measurable). My goal is achievable because I know that there are plenty of job listings posted daily on several different job finding websites that I can use to find myself an adequate employer. Finding a job that utilizes my bachelor’s degree is extremely relevant because I want to ensure that I will have prior work experience in the psychology field when I eventually graduate with my master’s degree and start the process of becoming a counselor or therapist. My goal is time- bound because I have decided that I want to accomplish this goal by the end of this year and be able to go into 2024 with a job that is more suited for me and my interests in psychology. This goal will help me achieve success in my career by allowing me to have prior knowledge and experience in a psychology work setting.

My second goal, to better manage my mental health, is specific because I have a clear idea of what I want to do in order to live a more mentally balanced life. I know that my goal will be achieved when I can more easily regulate my emotions, thoughts, and actions (measurable). Better managing my mental health is definitely considered achievable because I have already joined a DBT intensive outpatient program to help make it possible. I have also received information on different places where I can receive medication management. My goal is especially relevant to my success because it will allow me to live a less stressful and emotionally overwhelming life. I have made this goal time-bound by creating a deadline two years from now. This deadline is much longer than my previous goal because it will take different therapy methods and various attempts to find my right medication regime. This goal will help me achieve success in my personal life by helping me become a more emotionally stable person for not only myself, but also for my ten month old daughter. My third goal, to start receiving food stamps and subsidized daycare through the state, is specific because I have a plan to apply for these benefits online. I will know that this goal will be achieved when I either get my card for food stamps or can enroll my daughter in a subsidized daycare program (measurable). I think that this is achievable because I am considered low income and already receive health insurance through the state. My goal is very relevant to me because I have been struggling financially and mentally and need extra support. My goal is time- bound to my daughter’s first birthday in November. I would like for her to start daycare before or soon after she turns one so that she can have social interactions with other babies her age. This goal of mine will help me achieve success in my personal life by allowing me to secure reliable and nearly free childcare as well as take the burden of buying groceries off my plate.
Conclusion Achieving your idea of success can be extremely difficult at times as you may encounter situations or hardships that change the course of your life. But, if you utilize the SMART goals method you have a significantly better chance to follow through with your goals and take another step towards success. A goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound leaves little room for uncertainty. Applying this method to your goals would be nothing but beneficial. SMART goals make you define a clear path from the start to the finish that you need to follow in order to complete your goal. Possessing this method of goal-setting will completely change how you plan to reach success.
