Sydney Brewster 09/30/2022 1 PSYC 430s1 Fall 2022 Effect of Body Language on Construals Amy Cuddy explains in her TED Talk how important body language is in social situations, especially when conveying power. I have experienced this concept within my high school sports team, how the coach interacted with us and how he taught us to interact with other teams. He was a firm believer in “fake it until you make it” so he coached us to maintain a power position when we were tired during games. As we faced off with the other team between every point, he taught us to place our hands on our hips with our fingers forward and thumbs towards the back, while keeping our chest up. He insisted that we never flip our hands the other way or keel over between points so as to show the other team that we weren’t tired and we still maintained control of the game, no matter the score. Ironically, this worked and at times did convince the other team that we weren’t as exhausted as they were. By utilizing this power stance, we were able to gain a psychologic advantage over some of our opponents, given that our body language convinced them to form a construal that we were more powerful than them. If we had not adopted this change, opponents would not have formed this assumption which most likely would have resulted in much more difficult games. Furthermore, this allowed us to “fake it until we made it” because as we exhibited more powerful body language, we felt more powerful as we were more easily winning and not letting our exhaustion control us. This allowed us to experience the self-fulfilling prophecy as we tricked our brains into confirming our level of power, regardless of whether we truly were a better team than our opponents. Body language is one of the most important aspects of social psychology as it provides a wide array of feedback to the observer. Not only does it say a lot about the person exhibiting the behavior, but also directs the observer on how to feel about the person themselves. High power positions lead to the exhibitor feeling more confident as well as the observer believing them to be
Sydney Brewster 09/30/2022 2 PSYC 430s1 Fall 2022 more powerful, regardless of whether those traits are an accurate description (Cuddy, 2012). Cuddy depicts the power of body language in the corporate world, where the level of power one has is the most essential aspect of their position. People who portray themselves as more confident, open, and powerful tend to convince others of that due to their body language. This creates the construal in the observer’s mind that this person is worthy of power, attention, and respect. Our understanding of body language has strong relations with the concept of mirror neurons. Mirror neurons allow us to better relate to and understand those around us. This system is the key to human empathy, as our brains are able to process the facial expression and body language of someone in front of us and understand what it means. We are able to mentally associate a frown with feeling sad and thus makes us feel sad for the person who is frowning. Furthermore, as talked about in the video, our ability to get so involved in sports because we are truly able to place ourselves in the shoes of the athlete and the athlete’s (or team’s) accomplishments become ours by utilizing our mirror neuron system (Arjocu, 2009).
