Career Research Project Part 1: What I already know The topic/issue I am choosing to research is the affect parents have on their children’s mental health. Step 01. Tell the story behind your interest in the driving question/topic/issue you’ve chosen. For example, if visiting Hoover Dam as a child stands out as a moment when your curiosity was piqued about river systems, tell that story. As a kid I often felt ignored. My mother always told me that her issues were bigger, so my voice was never truly heard. Even when my issues were bigger at times, she made me feel like they were not important enough to be shared. Because I wasn’t as educated or as old my thoughts and mental health did not matter to her. Even though she treated me as a child she wanted me to act as an adult; I had to raise my siblings, the house had to be spotless, there always had to be groceries, and I had to take my siblings to all their events when my mother went through her depression moods. There wasn’t a strong male figure that stayed so I had to be the second mom. I was the oldest daughter that had all the responsibilities but no fun. I didn’t get to go out with friends or continue to play sports because I had to work and make sure there was food on the table. It really hit me when my biological father “passed away”, I believe he committed suicide, but my mother still tries to convince me otherwise. In general, I did not have the best upbringing, I was expected to act like an adult but was not treated as one. I found interest in counseling after I went to counseling. I want to help people, I want them to feel like their voices, issues, and achievements matter. I want parents to realize the effect they have on their children, so they don’t have to feel ignored or unimportant. Step 02 . Discuss what knowledge, experience, or background you already have about your chosen issue, before having done any research on it. Like I have stated before, I have personal experience with the issue of parents affecting a child's mental health. My actual research and knowledge of it is minimal but I know what type of issues a child can acquire as an outcome. Depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems are some that I am aware of. Part 2 What I Want to Find Out; Why I’m Researching Step 01. Present your driving question or issue. In this section you will ask additional sub- questions. These questions will lead you to those sources that will answer your questions. These questions are the fuel that guide you through the library or internet research work, interviews, observations, etc. What can parents do to better avoid the risk of affecting their children's mental health?
What are some of the issues or outcomes to children with poor mental health? Are these issues long term? Short term? Can disabilities occur or behavioral problems? What can children do to help themselves? How can we avoid parentification? Step 02. Tell us why you want/need the answers to these questions. A real need should surface here; you should demonstrate that this search may make a difference in your life, especially in the understanding of the work you intend to do, the current issues in your future field, and perhaps the contribution(s) you plan to make to the world. I am majoring in psychology, and I might want to pursue a career in child psychology. I want to learn about some of the problems children face and how I or parents can help their children before some of these mental health issues get bigger. Part Three: The Search Step 01. You need to read (or view—credible documentaries or YouTube interviews can be useful sources) at least three different highly credible sources and write about your experience with each source. Choose from these types of sources (you need at least one peer-reviewed article): People (interview or YouTube interview) Peer-reviewed journal articles (use the library as a resource) Books Credible websites (such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the CDC, the National Institutes of Health, etc.), etc., For each source, you will need to complete the following: 1. TED. “ How the Worst Moments in Our Lives Make Us Who We Are ” | Andrew Solomon.” YouTube , 21 May 2014, www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiM5a-vaNkg . 2. Harvard University. “Neglect.” Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University , Harvard University, 2015, developingchild.harvard.edu/science/deep-dives/neglect/. 3. “How Does Lack of Attention Affect Child Development? FamilyEducation.” Www.familyeducation.com. www.familyeducation.com/kids/development/how- doeslackattentionaffectchilddevelopment#:~:text=They%20may%20be%20disruptive %20in. Accessed 1 Oct. 2023.” Step 02. Write the story behind finding the source (How/where did you find this source?) Examine the credibility of the source (How did you determine whether it was credible or not? Think SIFT) Highlight key information you took from the source (What did you learn from this source, especially related to answering your research questions?)
Reaction to what you learned from this source (What did you think about what you learned?) Source 1 Credibility: It is a Tedtalk, any type of information shared is also cited. Key information: Andrew Solomon talks about people he met during his experiences with childhood trauma. He shares his trauma and how it affects him today. How I found the source: My English teacher typically gives out many Tedtalks or sources each week to use or watch if wanted or needed. I stumbled across this one a couple week back and I realize it’s related to what I am researching. So, I rewatched it to clarify and I feel like it is a good fit for child psychology, counseling, and mental health in general. Reaction to what I learned: A lot of what is in this Tedtalk is things I already assumed, but it was nice to have clarification on some of my assumptions. I learned a couple new things and I found it intriguing. Source 2 Credibility: Reviewed article from Harvard University. Key information: This article is about the cause and effect on neglection on a child. It goes over developmental problems, mental illness, and behavioral problems, and learning disabilities. How I found the source: I have been looking at articles for what it feels like all day. After searching for things like “children’s mental health” “parent’s effect on children” or “mental illness prevention”, I stopped and tried to think of one word to look up. The first word I thought about was neglect. That’s when I found this article. Reaction to what I learned: I learned a lot of interesting facts and information that will definitely be useful for me. This was a great informational article! Some of the things in this article were very relatable and things I already thought I knew; the restatement and proof were amazing to see! Source 3 Credibility: Has a creditable author who is a doctor. It has a publishing date. It is located on the Family Education website. Key information: This article goes over different parenting styles and the positive/negative with each style. It goes over the effect of lack of attention for each age group, goes over behavioral problems that can occur, and prevention strategies. How I found the source: Honestly, I was just looking up different phrases about children and mental health. This was on the second page, and I clicked on it. Reaction to what I learned: Honestly at first it was a lot of information to take in, but now after waiting a day then rereading it, I understood it all better. It’s very interesting how much information is on this opinion, or I guess statement I formed. Part Four: What I Learned, and What I Still Want to Know/Assessing Class Learning Step 01. Reflect upon the entire search experience, not only what you got out of it and what you've learned, but how this search has changed how you see your future field, yourself and your

role in that field, or anything else. It summarizes your travel, your journey, your quest for knowledge on a topic with which you were consumed. Before I began researching about my topic, I had already had personal experience with it, so it definitely made it easier for me. I knew what type of words or phrases I should look up to start my researching process, this also made it easier for me. After looking up different topics, phrases, and sentences I was able to locate and evaluate many different sources. In general, I was able to enhance my education on children's mental health and psychology. I learned new things about this topic, and I was also able to have clarification on information I already knew. I have learned that I love psychology and I know that this major suits me. I was consumed and intrigued throughout my whole research process. Step 02. You’ll also include here what you still want to know. What questions still linger, or were raised by your research? What issues and controversies did you learn about that make you curious? Remember—it’s OK if you don’t find all the answers; that’s not a “failure,” it’s just questions that remain as curiosities. You can always aim to get answers for the final portfolio draft, or you may realize some questions can’t be answered just yet. After reading many different articles and watching some videos I have learned quite a lot of new information on children’s mental health. Although I do still wonder about treatments and real prevention from mental illnesses or disorders. I am obviously aware we can’t completely prevent these from occurring but what have we done to help prevent this? What has changed? And what can I do, or we do to better this dilemma? Step 03. Reflect on your work as a researcher. How well did you do? What would you change about the process next time? What was the most productive use of your time? The least productive? Why? Which sources within your future field will you return to while you continue to study or look for work/internships/scholarships etc.? Personally, I think I did quite well researching on this topic, I typically struggle in the researching category but my personal experience and personal interest in this topic really helped me pull through. When researching something I enjoy I noticed that I became invested in learning about it. I found websites that were credible and relatable to my topic, and that is what is important. The only part I felt I struggled with was deciding which websites to use and which ones had a decent amount of information, I am a perfectionist, so I struggle with decision making at times. After finding good sources I favorited some of them just in case I need them in the future. Step 04. Finally, design a brief (2-3 minute) class assessment activity for the end of your presentation. This assessment will help students to remember the most important takeaways from what you present. You can design a short quiz, a writing or discussion prompt, or other activity designed to help students remember your presentation.
