1. As mentioned in the Module prework, self-care is important for resiliency. In 4-5 sentences , describe 2 or 3 self-care strategies you have used since coming to Carolina and how well have they worked. Bold each strategy. (For example, if you write about hiking , bold the term itself.) Now, look at the Network of Support Map in Canvas and select 1 resource category that you do not currently utilize for self-care. In 2 sentences , explain what the category is and in what ways incorporating it into your life could help you improve your self-care and resiliency. I have employed various self-care methods since arriving at UNC, such as meditation and immersing myself in the natural environment. Meditation has proven effective in helping me unwind and cope with stress, while spending time in nature has allowed me to disconnect from the hectic pace of daily life and discover solace within the natural world. Art therapy could serve as a creative outlet for self-expression, alleviate stress through artistic activities, and contribute to an overall improvement in my emotional well-being. where increased self-compassion would have benefited me was when I received a lower grade than expected on a major assignment. I felt deeply disappointed in myself and my abilities, which affected my self-esteem. Instead of being overly self- critical, I could have told myself, "It's okay to make mistakes; everyone has setbacks." I could have practiced self-kindness by saying, "I did my best, and I can learn from this experience to improve in the future." 2. In 1 sentence define self-esteem . In 1 sentence define self- compassion . Bold each term in your response. In 1 sentence , explain how self-esteem and self-compassion are different. Self-esteem refers to one's overall evaluation of their self-worth and abilities, while self-compassion is the practice of treating oneself with kindness and understanding, especially in times of failure or difficulty. Self-esteem is about self-worth and confidence, whereas self-compassion involves self-kindness and a sense of common humanity, recognizing that everyone makes mistakes and faces challenges. a. In 4-5 sentences , describe an event that has occurred to you while at Carolina where you would have benefited from increased self-compassion. A specific event at Carolina where increased self-compassion would have benefited me was when I received a lower grade than expected on a major assignment. I felt deeply disappointed in myself and my abilities, which affected my self-esteem. Instead of being overly self-critical, I could have told myself, "It's okay to make
mistakes; everyone has setbacks." b. With the 3 core components of self-compassion in mind, provide 3 explicit examples (using any or each of the components) of “self- talk” that you could have provided yourself during/after this event if you had treated yourself with more compassion. Be sure to number each example. 1. I could have practiced self-kindness by saying, "I did my best, and I can learn from this experience to improve in the future." 2. I could have practiced common humanity by reminding myself that it's normal to make mistakes and encounter obstacles, and that everyone would make mistakes sometimes. 3. I could practice mindfulness by judging self-critical thoughts like, "I'm a failure" or "I should have done better." and telling myself that these are just thoughts, and they don't define my worth as a person. 4. As mentioned in the Module prework, examining what you are grateful for and why adds to our overall well-being in various ways. Take a picture of something for which you are grateful and paste it into the document with your other Reflection answers. In 4-5 sentences, elaborate upon why you are grateful for the item in your picture. For example, it what specific ways has it added to your quality of life or your ability to have moments of self-care? Have the picture accessible to share during class when we discuss Module 4.
The beautiful sunset has significantly enhanced my quality of life and moments of self-care by providing a serene and awe-inspiring experience that allows me to pause, reflect, and find solace in the natural world, ultimately contributing to my overall well-being, and I am grateful for it because it offers a daily opportunity to connect with nature's beauty and unwind from the demands of daily life, fostering a sense of peace and gratitude.
