2 The SDQ was chosen as it is an excellent tool for social workers working with children, their parents and guardians, and their teachers. I plan to complete fields 3 and 4 with the local children's aid society, and knowledge about the SDQ and similar tools will help me provide relevant interventions and recommendations to my future clients. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) measures "behavioral and emotional difficulties that can be used to assess mental health problems in children and young people aged 4–17 years" (Hall, 2019). It allows children, parents and teachers to capture their perspectives on symptoms the child shows. There are many benefits to using the SDQ with children. Firstly, children ages 11-17 can independently complete it, which can be compared to parent and teacher versions. This independence provides the child with autonomy and freedom to self-score. Secondly, the SDQ can be completed with the help of a professional should clarification or follow-up questions be necessary (Child Outcomes Research Consortium, n.d.). Finally, the SDQ is a quick assessment tool that can be completed in five to ten minutes (Child Outcomes Research Consortium, n.d.). There are also some limitations and challenges when using the SDQ. First, this tool cannot be used alone to diagnose behavioral challenges (O'Neill, 2018, p.1). Additionally, O'Neill (2018) documents that professionals such as social workers need more insight into the complexity of client needs or any intervention outcomes. Finally, the SDQ may not account for diverse cultural norms of emotions and behaviors (Stolk et al., 2017, p. 18; Foley et al., 2022, p. 8; Kersten et al., 2016, p. 8).
