Word Count: 600 Kivlighan et. Al (2019) finds that therapists had differing amounts of effectiveness with clients based off gender and intersectionality factors like race. Crenshaw (1989) defines intersectionality as how different forms of oppression, such as racism and sexism, interact within a person’s identity. Grzanka’s (2020) article provides a framework for intersectionality to be applied to the entire field of psychology and shows why its implementation is necessary. Koç and Kafa (2019) finds that there is a lack of research available on the topics of intersectionality in psychology and provides areas for researchers to strengthen. A common topic found in each of these readings would be how identities of intersectionality, such as race and gender, interact with each party within the field of psychology. Black women seeking therapy should only be treated by therapists who are black themselves. Black women are a unique population with some of the most complex interacting identities and may not be able to be understood or treated effectively due to this (Kivlighan et. Al, 2019). Black women would be understood better by other black therapists who have potentially gone through the same or similar experiences, and this would ensure a better experience than if a incompetent person treated a black woman. An argument against this would be a lack of fitting therapists in the region. However, therapists must be registered with a board in order to practice, and a rule such as this would allow for the board to delegate therapists to regions based on population demographics of said area. By pairing the most complex REMs (racial ethnic minorities) with therapists of similar intersectionality mapping, it is ensured that the client potentially has a more positive outcome from their therapy.
Therapists should be required to complete training that directly teaches the concept of intersectionality as part of their education, and how to be aware of its potential impacts on a client. REMs, when compared to the rest of the population, have a lower positive outcome percentage (Kivlighan et. Al, 2019). This can be attributed to a lack of culturally competent therapists who are ill-equipped or otherwise unable to manage cultural differences in an effective manner (Kivlighan et. Al, 2019). An argument against this would be that it would be costly to change the education system and would also be hard to re-educate already practicing therapists. However, it is always worth the extra mile to ensure better experiences for all people involved in the field. Creating a new portion of education dedicated to this would not only be beneficial for REMs, but to all therapists by expanding their horizons. Therapists who are currently practicing in areas with large REM populations should be subject to an intersectionality test and need to receive a passing grade to continue practicing in that area. As REMs are at higher risk of lower positive outcome rate in therapy sessions at the hands of culturally incompetent or intersectionality inept professionals, areas with higher REM populations should have therapists who are best suited for such a demographic. REM needs will be better met with professionals with an aptitude for treating individuals with needs like theirs. An argument against this would be that it is not feasible to round up therapists, force a test upon them, and then ask them to relocate. However, therapy is a very giving field, and majority of practitioners value helping their clients above all, and this desire to help would drive them to the region they are best suited for (Duncan, 2011). This movement of therapists would help get clients the best help available while maintaining job stability for the therapists.
