You will first review the various psychological disorders that you’ve learned about in the course and select 3 disorders to focus on for this assignment. Using a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet for each psychological disorder, respond to each of the rubric criteria below to structure your blog post. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Blog post headline: It’s understandable that hearing descriptions of abnormal behavior can cause psychological discomfort. Our brains are weird to seek familiarity and predictability, so encountering unfamiliar or unpredictable behavior can be unsettling. It’s important to remember that everyone’s experience with mental health is unique, and seeking support from professionals can clarify and managing these reactions. Three selected disorders: Anxiety Mania   Psychosis In your own words, identify and describe the main diagnostic features of each of the disorders selected. Anxiety - is when you’re feeling nervous, restless or tense, it sometimes has you feeling like you’re in danger, heart beating fast, sweating, trembling feeling weak tired, and even hyperventilating. With anxiety you also have trouble concentrating and thinking about anything other than the present. Mania- people experience mania on its own, or it may be part of a mental health condition. Mania has many disorders such as bipolar disorder such as schizoaffective disorder, substance induced mania, and bipolar disorder secondary to another medical condition. Psychosis - is a part of hallucination to where it has you seeing and hearing things that aren’t there. May 4, 2018 Consider biomedical factors: Describe what it means to characterize the disorders as “diseases of the nervous system and the body.” To characterize the disorders as diseases of the nervous system and the body depends on how the brain is functioning. In our brain, we have something called neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters help transmit signals throughout our bodies. When these are imbalanced in the brain, it causes dysfunctions to occur within our minds. Therefore, mental disorders are caused by biological brain diseases. www.sciencedirect.com 1
Consider clinical factors: Describe the similarities between the disorders selected. In what ways might these similarities impact diagnosis and treatment? Anxiety, Mania, and Psychosis has many similarities between the disorders such as the clinical factors. Anxiety and Mania have factors of compulsiveness. With anxiety you may have to wash your hand multiple times in fear of catching something which could cause you to have anxiety. Psychosis falls into the similarities in a way that describes bizarreness and delusions. Mania and psychosis have you doing things that you may not realize now, such as excessive spending. Diagnosis can be confused very often due to the level it may fall under. It’s very important to know all the symptoms you are having so you can get the proper treatment for the disorder/or disorders you are experiencing. One treatment or medication may not work for the other. Consider historical factors: Describe the ways deinstitutionalization has impacted patient rights, levels of care, and access to treatment of the disorders over time. Accordingly, in theory deinstitutionalization consists of three component processes: the release of persons residing in psychiatric hospitals to alternative facilities in the community, the diversion of potential new admissions to alternative facilities, and the development of special services for the care of a noninstitutionalized mentally ill population. www.psychologyonline.org Consider sociocultural factors: Describe the social and cultural changes that have caused shifts in the public’s perception of the disorders over time. The social and cultural changes have made a great improvement on mental health awareness. Today people have some kind of knowledge of what could be occurring in their lives versus back then they really couldn’t identify it. Today there’s science that being studied about how the brain functions. In this case, it means we will now know what causes the disorders we currently are having. They have many options available to get the help you need to improve your life such as medications and therapy. There’s always room for improvement for mental health. We are dealing with lives, and everyone should deserve help when they are battling mental health. Part Two For Part Two, choose 1 disorder from the 3 you discussed in Part One. Respond to each of the three questions in a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate and address the rubric criteria. One selected disorder: Stress Consider the mind-body connection: Describe whether a discernible bidirectional relationship exists between the disorder and physical illness. If so, explain. Yes, there is a relationship between physical illness and stress problem. Being under a lot of stress might impair your 2
immune system and increase your susceptibility to illness. Additionally, stress can cause harmful behaviors like irregular eating and sleeping patterns, which can further harm your physical health. It's crucial to look after your physical and mental health. Sometimes I tend to have these same symptoms when I am up under a whole lot of stress. Consider the impact of language and messaging: Describe how the words we use (e.g., in casual conversation, in media communications) when discussing a disorder influence our willingness or ability to manage the disorder. It's important that we use language that stresses independence, resilience, and support when addressing influences or our capacity to handle stress disorder. We can talk about how various things affect our levels of stress or how we can develop coping mechanisms for stress. Finding methods that work for us is key, as is asking for assistance when necessary. Don’t forget that we are in charge of controlling our stress disorder. Consider the effect of lifestyle choices: Describe the small, but significant, changes in attitude/behavior we can make that could help us to manage the symptoms of the disorder. Changing our attitudes and behaviors in minor but meaningful ways can be extremely helpful in managing stress disorder. Examples include engaging in regular physical activity, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and using relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation. You can also ask friends or specialists for guidance. Keep in mind that every small effort counts for improving stress disorder treatment.
