Interview Assignment Makenzie Perry January 29, 2024 Summary: For this assignment I interviewed a parent of a child with auCsm spectrum disorder. The child is eleven years old. The child is verbal but has severe limitaCons with verbal communicaCon. The lack of verbal skills causes the child to struggle expressing how they feel and making friends with their peers. The child recently received an AAC device and is learning how to use it. The child does receive speech therapy and ABA services. This child loves to play with trains! The child likes to help their mother cook as well. The mom menConed in the interview that she like to take them places during sensory friendly hours to avoid oversCmulaCon. The child is currently homeschooled but used to be in public school in a CDC classroom. The mom of this child menConed that having a child on the spectrum as made her more of an empatheCc person towards everyone. It has also made her more willing to share her experience of being a parent of a kid with special needs. The mom menConed that the most rewarding part of being a parent with a kid with auCsm is watching them grow and learn new things. She said that she loves when the child come home and is saying new words or being able to Ce their own shoes.
Conclusion : In conclusion , we cannot say that all students with auCsm will struggle with the same learning disabiliCes (Orlich et al., 2016, p. 49). Every child will be different and require different types of support in the school system and at home. Every child with auCsm has different disabiliCes. AuCsm is a broad spectrum with different levels. AuCsm spectrum disorder is a construct used to describe individuals with a specific combinaCon of impairments in social communicaCon and repeCCve behaviors, highly restricted interests and/or sensory behaviors (Lord et al., 2020). This child receives lots of different therapies to help with their auCsm. All these different therapies will help the child socially, mentally, and physically in their life. This individual has certain things that they focus in on and contribute a lot of their free Cme too which is cars, trucks, and trains. I learned a lot of this parent about what it is like to raise a child with special needs in today’s society. Not everyone is welcoming, understanding, and accepCng that things may need to be done differently in order to accommodate the child with special needs. As people without special needs we need to be more willing to learn, accept, understand, and help the ones that do. We should also be willing to lend a hand to the parents of these children and be there for one another. Having an open mind and heart is important, especially in educaCon. “Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your god. I am the lord” (LeviCcus 19:14).
