Treatment of substance abuse and addiction has many facets to it. It is crucial to find the best option for each individual. Addicts drop out of treatment due to lack of comfort, they feel the treatment option is irrelevant, or simply because they are not ready to give up that lifestyle (Ibana & Cohen, 2014, p. 9.12). When outsiders hear spirituality and SUDs treatment, they automatically assume that a 12-step program such as AA or NA is being discussed. Spiritual programs rely on belief and faith to help restore abstinence from drugs and alcohol (Ibana & Cohen, 2014, p. 9.28). For this reason, I have difficulty finding any similarities between Christian spirituality and the stages of change model. A big part of the stages of change is self-reevaluation. This involves looking at oneself and changing how one sees the problem or solution (Connors et al., 2016, p. 11). Another behavioral aspect is self-liberation; this is the development of one's ability to make choices and change behaviors (Connors et al., 2016, p. 12). This goes against the faith and belief in the Christian religion that God is the one who fixes the problems through prayer and scripture. Like in a 12-step program, Christians rely on their higher power to guide them through their recovery journey. The stages of change model is used to describe voluntary change processes, not mandatory or coerced (Connors et al., 2016, p. 8). In contrast, Christian spirituality requires a mandatory belief in God and his power to resolve the problem and guide the individual back to the right path. References Connors, G. J., Diclemente, C.
