As an elementary education teacher , you will make decisions based on your knowledge of child development continuously, many times without even realizing it. Over the years, child development research and theory has shaped early childhood education and the decisions teachers make in the classroom. After watching the video below, describe a time when you observed what you believed to be atypical development of a child in the physical, cognitive, or social-emotional domain. What knowledge did you base this from? Discuss the ways you will differentiate activities and make instructional decisions in your classroom based on children’s developmental readiness. I have worked in childcare since 2014 and have many stories that come to mind. The one that I think of most is I had a child in my pre-k classroom and he was 5, going to kindergarten in a couple months. This child would not play with other children, would not answer to his name being called, along with many other tell-tale signs of autism. His mother would not get him evaluated and coincidentally I went to do an observation ant his school and this little boy had an IEP and was getting the therapies that he needed years prior to starting school. I knew that this boy was developing atypically from the classes I had been taking during my associate degree and was able to pick up on the signs. I plan to do a lot of one on one during the beginning of the year with my students to get familiar with how they learn and how I can develop my lessons to get them to be able to learn as much as possible. For children with adhd, I really enjoy seating where the students can pick a place in the classroom that allows movement. I think that feedback from your students about different lessons on how much they learned is a great tool to be able to see where they are at with each topic and allowing for more time with the topics if needed. Being flexible with each lesson allowing more time and being able to teach each topic more than one way is also very important.
