As an elementary education teacher , you will make decisions based on your knowledge of child development continuously, many times without even realizing it. Over the years, child development research and theory has shaped early childhood education and the decisions teachers make in the classroom. After watching the video below, describe a time when you observed what you believed to be atypical development of a child in the physical, cognitive, or social-emotional domain. What knowledge did you base this from? Discuss the ways you will differentiate activities and make instructional decisions in your classroom based on children’s developmental readiness. Hello class, As a teacher of 3 and 4-year-olds, every day I observe the atypical development of a child. I have 3-year-old children who still don't know to go to the bathroom, like most of their age. I also have four-year-olds who don't speak because they have a language delay when most of them already have complete conversations. I have children who don't know how to hold a pencil and others who already write their full name and are the same age. What I try to implement in my classroom are different activities that have the same concept of the curriculum. For example, with children who are just learning to hold a pencil, I work on fine motor skills like with Play-Doh, and with children who are already writing their names, I begin to introduce the alphabet with different tracing activities. Also ,what I do with those who have problems with speech is that I give them one-on-one instruction, I also make them play with those who talk more so that they can listen to different vocabulary repetitively.
