Attachment Observation Worksheet (PSY 230) Observe young children (age 1 – 3 years old) interacting with adult caregivers. Use the guidelines below to document the child/caregiver observations you make. 1. Choose a location (suggestions are parks, grocery stores, and other public locations) and observe the interactions between a child and his or her caregiver. You will need to choose two separate children/caregivers to observe so that you can compare your observations. The child must be free to move around, so cannot be strapped into a stroller, high chair, etc. 2. Make sure to observe both the child and the caregiver for several minutes. 3. For each observation the following information should be collected: Observation 1 (8 points) a. What is the approximate age of the child you selected? 2 years old b. What is the location? Park c. Approximately how far apart are the child and adult (distance)? 4-6 feet d. Use check marks or tick marks to keep track of the number of times the child looked at the caregiver and the number of times the caregiver looked at the child. Based on my observation, this child had a secure attachment style with her caregiver. The child would go off and always come happily back to their caregiver as kind of an “anchor” as described in the textbook (Belsky, 2022). When the parent would go to the child they would be
happy to see them. Observation 2 (8 points) a. What is the approximate age of the child you selected? 3 years old b. What is the location? grocery store c. The attachment style I observed here also appeared to be secure. The child was excited to see their caregiver, which is an important reaction that aligns with the secure attachment style (Belsky, 2022). The caregiver seemed to be very aware and understanding of the child’s actions. Comparison of observations (4 points) Write a paragraph to address these questions: What were the similarities and differences you noticed between the two observations? How do they relate to the attachment styles observed? What else in the situation may have contributed to the child’s interactions with the caregiver? Cite your source(s). (4 points) Both observations appeared to have secure attachment styles, as the children were using their caregiver as a safe place to explore in the proximity of them. It was different because in the park the caregiver and child were actively playing so they interacted more, but in the store the caregiver was trying to shop so there wasn’t as much interaction going on. That being said, both
