“How Mad Are You?” Assignment After watching the documentary in its entirety, answer the following questions. Save the worksheet with your answers highlighted as a .doc or .docx and then attach your file to the assignment link in Bb. Name: ________________________________________________________ 1. What was the intent of this program? (1 pt) This program was created with the intent to find the line between where we consider people to be mentally ill, versus perfectly healthy. How do we judge that? 2. What are the professions of the three experts and why do these professions qualify them to assign diagnostic labels? (2 pt) Professor Micheal First is a psychiatrist from Columbia University, Richard Bental is a professor of clinical psychology from the University of Bangor, and Ian Hulert is a psychiatric nurse and mental health advisor to the Royal College of Nursing. These professions qualify them to assign diagnostic labels because they all have experience or a deep understanding of psychology from a clinical/diagnostic perspective. 3. This program was inspired by the classic Rosenhan study (mentioned in the video). Some of Rosenhan’s participants were kept hospitalized up to _____ days despite not having a mental illness. (1 pt) a. 3 d b. 7 c. 21 d. 52 4. What was the 2 nd task the participants faced and what was the goal of this task? (2 pt) The second task was the Wisconsin card sort test. It was a test of the brain’s ability to process information and poor performance has been linked to bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, and OCD. 5. What types of traits or symptoms were the experts hoping to see from the participants during the paintball challenge? (1 pt) The experts were hoping to expose a defeatist attitude, particularly from the team leaders. They suspected that someone in a leadership position who’s struggling with depression and low self esteem would be difficult and they could spot it. They focused on Holly, who has appeared to be pessimistic to see if she has depression. Also, they looked at the reactions of people when they found out they lost. 6. At the end of day 3, the panel of experts correctly identified Dan as having __ OCD__ but incorrectly identified __ Yasmin__ as not having a psychological disorder. (2 pt) 7. The experts correctly concluded that __ Alex__ had a previous eating disorder based on the results of the __ Body Image__ task. (2 pt) 8. The experts incorrectly concluded that __ Vicki__ had a psychological disorder based on his/her performance on the __ Bead__ task. (2 pt) 9. Why are the experts so concerned about misdiagnosing the participants? (1 pt) The experts were concerned about misdiagnosing the participants because they are professionals so they want to prove themselves and the disorders are serious, so a misdiagnosis could be harmful to the individual. They even go as far as to describe a diagnosis of schizophrenia to be the psychiatrist equivalent of telling someone that they have cancer.
10. Discuss what the experts mean when they talk about a ‘continuum’ of mental health (2 pt). The experts describe a continuum of mental health as a spectrum and that people all around us are going through mental health issues. 11. How did the experts feel about correctly diagnosing only 2 of the 5 participants? (1 pt) The experts were happy about only correctly diagnosing 2 of the 5 participants because it makes a point to the public that you can’t just look at someone and assume something about them. 12. Which of the following is a description of how the participants felt about the outcome? (1 pt) a. relieved b. surprised c. proud d. all of the above 13. Share a 2-3 sentence reaction of your experience of this program. (2 pt) This program was very interesting, I was surprised to learn just how hard it was for the panel to try to figure out who of the group had been diagnosed with a mental illness. Seeing the participants' reactions to being chosen correctly or incorrectly was intriguing as well, and they all found a positive way to look at it. It proves just how hard it is to find where the line of sanity lies, and that you shouldn’t judge people by their labels.
