U09A1 - Theoretical Analysis and Application: Person Centered Theory Amina Malik-Dollison COUN 5239 – Theories of Psychotherapy Dr. Azra December 12,2021
Theoretical Analysis and Application: Person Centered Therapy As a future counselor learning about theories and concepts of counseling are key components for a success career in counseling. In this paper that will be presented will explain one the many therapy concepts, person-centered therapy. This type of therapy originated from humanistic approach. The term, “humanistic” has evolved throughout the ages. According to the authors, they explained that “During the Renaissance it was used to describe secular rather than religious scholars who studied the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome” (Kottler & Montgomery 2019). Client-centered therapy was created by Carl Rogers and used a method called the person- centered approach starting in the 1980’s, hence how the name ‘person- centered counseling’ came to be commonly used. This has shown to be effective amongst persons suffering from depression, anxiety and grief. Theoretical Analysis: Person-Centered Theory This approach is focused on the client, so it allows the therapist to adapt based on the varying needs of the clients. The counselor needs to understand and appreciate the unique aspects of the counselee's personality in addition to involving his own aspects of personality in the counseling process Because this method is so flexible to the client, it can be beneficial for clients that present several conditions. This method is beneficial for clients that present several issues this method allows them to freely express all their needs to the therapist who serves as the “listening ear”. The therapist gives their full and complete attention to the client, concentrating on the internal experience of self, and then reflects to the client what was heard and understood. Concepts, Principles, and Assumptions of Person-Centered Therapy
The key concept of this theory is to make the client feel safe and comfortable to express him or herself appropriately that treatment can be applied and be successful. The therapist must maintain a bias approach in order to establish trust with client. Three fundamental understanding of a therapist during any session, would that: The therapist is congruent with the client, The therapist provides the client with unconditional positive regard. The therapist shows an empathetic understanding to the client. Personal Philosophies and Views As a counselor in training, I have been studying and learning different approaches that can be successful in different setting and situations. One of the many theories that I have grown to adore and want to learn more about, would be that of the person-centered therapy. According to the late Carl Rogers he created this theory because he didn’t feel understood in his early life, he wanted this approach to help other feel understood the same way. I resonate with this key principle of theory, because my goal as a counselor is to help my clients reach the root of their issue and to build resiliency for life many challenges. I believe that my personality aligns with this style of therapy which is also a key component of the therapist role in the session with the client. The therapist goal is to create a warm environment that makes that client feel at ease and establishing a constructive genuine relationship between client and therapist. My main reason for pursuing counseling is to promote awareness in my community about what mental health an Evaluation of Evidence Supporting: Person-Centered Therapy According to an article titled Identifying and developing therapeutic principles for trauma‐focused work in person‐centered and emotion‐focused therapies, the authors explained that person- centered therapy can be used with emotion -focused therapy. The study showed that clients that receive these types of therapies showed great progress in overcoming and handling their issues through this theory.

Appropriateness of Person-Centered Therapy for Diverse Populations Person -centered therapy can be used in many different settings, including working with adolescents facing trauma, parenting issues, individual counseling , and adult relationships. Therapeutic Case Goals Aligned to Person Centered Therapy The case that I chose was the case of Juanita a 45-year-old woman that is facing family issues. She would best benefit from PCT, based on her reporting that she has accomplished many goals in her life. Our initial session the client was in an incongruence state of mind. As we progressed over the last three session, together we came up with various strategies to deal with her current life issues. Her main concern was having time for herself and mentally have the strength and awareness to support her mother and daughter through their life changes. Application and Evaluation of Person-Centered Therapy: Evidence-Based Techniques During the session with Juanita, we were able to break through some barriers that has been causing to feel negative emotion. In my session I acted as a facilitator and allowed Juanita to address her issues without any judgment on my end. Person centered therapy emphasizes that the client must oversee how the session progress and what situations we touch base on. Juanita was very receptive and had a positive approach to each interaction that we had. She explained that coming to my sessions allowed her to have control of her thoughts and how she would handle situations in her daily life. The strengths from a person-centered perspective, is that the best source of knowledge about the client is from the client. The therapist allows the client to explain all their dilemmas allowing the therapist to seek for clues on what issues are primary. This technique allows the therapist to gather information about the client without leading the session. The limitation of this theory is that it does not focus on the change of behavior of the client but only, recognizing the root of the issue.
Conclusion The profession of counseling has evolved from many theories and philosophies created by many brilliant theorists. Carl Rogers was noted as the godfather of the person-centered therapy, he developed this theory to move away from the traditional therapist and client relationship, emphasizing that in for a person to have change they must feel understood or valid in their emotional expression. Carl Rogers theory has evolved and is applicable across a broad range of circumstances. Evidence has shown that empathy is the key component to a successful relationship between client and therapist. Through a constructive bond the client is able to experience comfortability with the treatment and with therapist. In the case study that was chosen I was able to apply key techniques that allowed my session with Juanita to have a positive outcome. She now has a better outlook on her family situation and has the regained the motivation to continue her studies.
