CURRENT STATUS OF PHARMACOTHERAPY FOR PTSD: AN EFFECT SIZE ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLED STUDIES Introduction Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects millions of people. This disorder is not prejudice or bias. Anyone, at any age, can develop PTSD. It is a chronic psychiatric condition that is brought on by and related to a traumatic experience. Some of the symptoms of the disorder vary depending on the person. Some people experience agitation, nervousness and anxiety, problems with concentration or thinking, problems with memory, headaches, depression and crying spells, suicidal thoughts or attempts as well as mood swings. This can be confusing, scary, and hard to handle. Research The purpose for this research is to find out if the effective pharmacologic agents is likely to prove or not prove to be challenge. How would it effect the clients who participated in the study? Would the results from the study open the door for future research on the subject? Method In this study, they based the numbers off an effect size of less than 0.5 or lower (small group), 0.5-0.8 (medium group), and 0.8 or greater would be considered large group according to conventional standards. The groups were labeled as posttreatment experienced group and posttreatment controlled group. Alternative procedures were used if the means and standard deviations were not reported. Two effect sizes were present in the study. PTSD effect size (which was based on the best overall measures of specific symptoms and an overall study effect size. (Determined by taking the average of PTSD symptoms effect sizes, overall PTSD effect size as well as depression and anxiety effect sizes).
Significance Testing What is the likelihood of finding a position of effect sizes that agrees with the serotonergic that are relative to noradrenergic selectivity? P< .05 The findings are significant based on traditional critical values. The Result The effect size in the analysis were based on only one study for each medication that they used. They also used the data that was collected from the effect size analyses of treatment studies. They found that there was an advantage of using more serotonergic antidepressant as treatment for PSTD and it was encouraged. Why did the researcher include both? I don’t feel like the researcher provided enough significant testing information. References Penava el al., 1. (1996).
