CASE STUDY OUTLINE FOR ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY TOM BRADY Evaluator Name: ___Lillian Schmitz_______________________________________ Client Name: ___________________Tom Brady________________________ (1 point Tom Brady was diagnosed with three disorders: Schizoaffective Disorder, Unspecified Eating Disorder, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation. In this first section, think about each of these disorders and then list all of the signs and symptoms of these disorders that you see in the case study. This section needs to be thorough and detailed but can be done in bullet point form. Each section is worth three points. (9 points total) Disorder One: Schizoaffective Disorder (combination of Major Depression and Schizophrenia) Agreed to hearing noises when none were present Does not think there is anything positive in life He has had one suicidal attempt before Self harming behavior when he is angry; he headbutts the wall “because it feels good” Sad all of the time Disorder Two: Unspecified Eating Disorder He binges almost every meal Intentionally vomits 3-4 times a week Eats anything he finds in the kitchen He will break into the cabinets to eat in the night if food is limited from him He has been binging and purging for around 6 months Disorder Three: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation He could not sit still in an appointment He’s very distractable He has poor concentration and will interrupt He has difficulty organizing himself or finding things He’s overactive, fidgety and restless Determine the possible etiology for this disorder using what you know from the case study. Your book and online sources may also be used for this section. Make sure that these answers are at least 150 words in length. (6 points) a. Biological (genetics, chemical imbalance, structural abnormalities) for Schizoaffective Disorder ( Please record your word count here: __94___
Research believes that environmental factors could explain why some people experience symptoms of schizoaffective disorder. It is also found that the risk of developing this disorder is greater for first degree relatives of affected individuals, like siblings or children, as compared to the general public. Studies suggest that variations in many genes, each with small effect, combine to increase the risk of developing schizoaffective disorder. There may be genetic variations with larger effects in some affected families or individuals, but they’re rare in the general population, and it’s unclear which particular genes are involved. b. Biological (genetics, chemical imbalance, structural abnormalities) for Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder ( Please record your word count here: __78___ There are many environmental and genetic risk factors with small individual effects that come together that increase the risk of having ADHD. Structural imaging studies show that the brains are significantly smaller in children with ADHD than those without it. Research also shows that parents and siblings or someone who has ADHD are more than likely to have ADHD themselves; there is a strong hereditary component, with up to a 91% likelihood of passing the disorder to children. What will make the treatment successful? This section must be at least 150 words. (3 points) Please record your word count here: __89___ What would make treatment successful is if he were more strongly supervised, his food intake was more controlled, and he was in an environment where he could get the individual attention he needs. It would also greatly help if he was made to regularly take his medicine, instead of skipping doses when he doesn’t feel like taking it. I think if he was closely monitored and went back into therapy, coached on how to treat others and work through the trauma of his, he could make a big improvement. What could contribute to its failure? This section must be at least 150 words (3 points) Please record your word count here: __98___
I would say what contributed to the failure would be how he was not given any punishment at all. The courts did not take him in, his mother could not punish him because she was fearful of getting beat by her own son, and that he was not guided in what to do, how to cope, or anything like that. He did not have a healthy outlet for his anger, he did not regularly take his medications, and he did not know how to cope or limit his outbursts and anger whenever something happened that he didn’t like. What do you struggle with MOST about this case? This section must be at least 150 words for full credit. (3 points) Please record your word count here: ___158__ What I struggled with most was reading how violent he was. Especially when it got to the part of him killing a puppy and a baby bird. I love animals and it always hurts when I hear about something like that happening. It was also horrible with how he was treating his family. To read that his father physically and emotionally abused his mother and then for him to turn around and do the same was so hard to hear about, I felt so bad for her. I felt bad for his siblings who got beat on when they acted in a way he didn’t like or say something he didn’t like- and that they were beat so bad that they had to go to the hospital! I felt a little bad for Tom because he didn’t have a support system or anyone guiding him or holding him accountable; he also was just really sad all the time. What is one treatment option that you would explore with this client? This section must be at least 100 words in length. (3 points) Please record your word count here: _106__ One treatment I would do is getting him back into therapy. Therapy can help a lot of people and I strongly believe it would help him too if he stuck with it and really tried. Therapy would give him someone to vent to, some coping mechanisms, and other outs for things he needed help with. It would start with his behavior and how he treats everyone around him, and deal with his trauma from his past and childhood. I really think that how his homelife was and how he got bullied made him who he was and he could improve with someone there to help him. This adolescent is psychiatrically ill, and one of the dangers that he poses is to his family. What concerns do you have about his mother, father, stepfather, and siblings? And why do you have these concerns? This section must be at least 150 words for full credit. (3 points) Please record your word count here: _58____ The concerns I have for his family is how much trauma he puts them through. They have to be scarred in some way with how he treat them and how the father treated them. Most people only focus on the client, but the family of the patient are going through tough things too having to deal with him.
