PSY 211 Module Two Milestone Template Review the article on the six dimensions of wellness. Then answer each question with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Choose one of the wellness dimensions and explain whether you feel it is guided more by nature or nurture. Explain your response. Wellness can be defined as, “…a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of illnesses (Dienstman, 2021.)” In order to lead a life abundant with health and happiness, it is recommended to foster six dimensions of wellness which includes physical wellness, emotional wellness, intellectual wellness, spiritual wellbeing, social wellbeing, and occupational wellbeing. The dimension of wellness that I believe is most guided by nurture is physical wellness. Most physical ailments, either illnesses or congenital defects, can be improved by getting enough sleep, physical exercise, proper nutrition, and stayed hydrated. For example, my sister who has multiple sclerosis, often feels the effects of her disease when she is not properly rested or hasn’t eaten properly. She has been able to keep many of her symptoms at by through a healthy lifestyle although it was a disease she was born with. Similarly, I was born with a congenital defect in my back that used to cause me a great deal of pain. Through physical exercise, I have virtually zero pain today. Essentially, it is possible to battle our biology and genetics with a healthy, active lifestyle. Explain how one dimension of wellness influences cognitive well-being during a specific stage of development. Although I believe that multiple dimensions of wellness can influence cognitive well-being in various stages of development, intellectual wellbeing influences cognitive well-being during later stages of development. When older adults can keep learning and challenge their brains, they can not only maintain their cognitive abilities, but even improve upon them. Dienstman (2021,) recommends keeping your mind sharp by, “…reading, learning a foreign language, playing an instrument or doing puzzles.” In fact, a recent study found a correlation between older adults who play instruments with have better cognitive function, mood, and overall quality of life (Seinfeld et al., 2013). Identify the wellness dimension that you feel most in control of. Explain your response. The dimension of wellness that I feel I have the most control over is my physical wellness. There are various parts of my life I feel as though are out of my control, however, physical wellness is something I feel as though I have control over. I am very regimented in my fitness routine, play on a field hockey team, and take yoga classes. I make sure to eat a balanced diet while prioritizing protein as well as drink 80-100 ounces of water every day. I could probably do with more sleep but co-sleeping with a toddler is not conducive to a robust sleep schedule. All the effort I put into my physical wellness manifests balance in other areas of wellness that I struggle with such as my emotional and social wellbeing. Identify the wellness dimension that you feel least in control of. Explain your response. 1
The wellness dimension I am in the least control of is easily my emotional wellbeing. I have ADHD which I was diagnosed with in my 20’s. I also was recently diagnosed with bipolar. Needless to say, I have a very difficult time regulating my emotions. Nevertheless, with medication and DBT therapy I am learning tools for regulation. Choose one dimension that you believe to be predominant in development. Explain your response. One dimension that I believe to be predominant in development is emotional wellness. Every person not only has emotions but is responsible for learning how to respond to them in an appropriate way. Learning how to respond to emotions can be a lifelong learning process. Even those who can regulate their emotions well, will have new emotions that present as their lives progress, such as grief or romantic love. Having the ability to regulate your emotions appropriately is an essential skill. Without this skill, it can have far reaching deleterious effects on other domains of wellness. For example, a bad emotional response can affect your social wellbeing as others might not want to be around someone who’s moods are unpredictable. It is also possible that a bad mood or emotion could prevent someone from going to the gym or another physical activity. Or perhaps a bad mood or emotion could affect employment negatively as well. Explain how emotional intelligence and resilience factors affect your well-being. o Consider how you can apply the dimensions of wellness to support your own well-being in your response. Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand your own emotions and the ability to know how to regulate or react to emotions as well as the ability to read others’ emotions and adapt. Resilience refers to the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back despite difficulties in life. These two skills factors into well-being in an immeasurable way. As previously stated, without the ability to regulate our emotions it can affect each dimension of wellness negatively. One study concluded that, “… results suggest that as the capacity of understanding and regulation of emotional intelligence increases, happiness also increases (Guerra-Bustamante et al., 2019.)” More recently it has been found that, “… Recent research suggests a strong correlation between emotional intelligence and positive wellbeing (Reilly, 2023.)” In fact, most of the articles I reviewed all correlate well-honed emotional intelligence skills with over all positive well-being. 2
