Carl Whitaker is most well-known for addressing the role of the entire family in the therapeutic process, while insuring to not scapegoat one family member or even a specific family problem. “For Whitaker, therapy is an art, and he recommends substituting for theory faith in one’s own experience and the ability to allow the process of therapy to unfold in an authentic and genuinely responsive manner.” (Becvar & Becvar, 20212. Pg 160) Therapy is described as an intimate, interactive, and parallel experience during which each member becomes equally vulnerable. Carl Whitaker’s aim of therapy is to both help individuals grow and to help them be able to do so in the context of their families. First it would be important to meet with the whole family. “Experiential family therapy means developing a therapist–client relationship in sequential and overlapping patterns… this kind of therapy means becoming engaged in and, in fact, heightening the emotional and expressive feelings between client and therapist, and seeking a real depth of involvement.” (Becvar & Becvar, 20212. Pg 162) Multiple sessions would be needed to learn the family’s symptoms. The bed wetting is simply a symptom of stress within Zorah’s life wither it be moving, seeing less of her grandparents, or a parent not being around as much as they were. Some interventions could be separating interpersonal stress and intrapersonal stress, augmenting the despair of a family member, utilizing affective confrontation, and treating children like children and not like peers. “Family members are taught how to use fantasy to expand their emotional repertoire, and they learn to take risks. The family is offered ideas it may freely accept or reject.” (Becvar & Becvar, 20212. Pg 163) Becvar, D. S., & Becvar, R. J. (2012).
