Video Questions: What are the four basic relationship patterns in Systems Theory? Nuclear family emotional process: Bowen theorized that four basic relationship patterns influence family tension levels: marital conflict, dysfunction in one spouse, impairment of one or more children, and emotional distance. (PopPsych, 2019) What family role do you feel would be the most difficult to work with? Explain I think that the most difficult family role would be the Lost Child. An individual in a family that is often ignored, quiet, and seems or feels invisible. This person has a low sense of self, identity, and is seen as just functional. Not much is expected of the Lost child, because this person is often not pushed to try hard or to succeed. (DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY ROLES | HERO? SCAPEGOAT? MASCOT? LOST CHILD, n.d.) Chapter Questions: What are four principles integral to family therapy? The four principles are Wholeness, meaning that families are organized wholes with interdependent components, and that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Anamorphosis , an evolutionary concept referring to the complex changes that occur in the family unit’s composition and function over time (e.g., births, deaths, separation). Homeostasis , a regulatory function that seeks equilibrium or stability in patterns of family member interactions, patterns that often are not amenable or responsive to change. Circularity or circular causality , the principle that patterns of interaction are bidirectional, reciprocal, and circular, rather than linear, and that there is no identified beginning or end in the sequence of events in these interactions. (Thombs & Osborn, 2019). What are four criticisms of the concept of codependency? What is an alternative characterization or reference? The four criticisms are pathological complementarity, interlocking pathology, and over adequate– inadequate reciprocal. (Thombs & Osborn, 2019). These references are consistent with Miller and colleagues’ (2011) stress-coping hypothesis and the stress–strain–coping–support model (Orford, Copello, Velleman, & Templeton, 2010). These are alternatives to the disturbed family or codependence hypothesis. (Thombs & Osborn, 2019).
