As I move through the counseling program with Walden and grasp an understanding of various theories and techniques I find myself most drawn to Cognitive Behavioral therapy models. However, I find an integrative approach to be most advantageous for the client and therapist. Integrative psychotherapy allows me to draw from several models to fit my client's specific need. For example, I find CBT, Narrative Therapy, and Existential Therapy as having solid theoretical foundations and countless useful approaches. Research into relative effectiveness between psychotherapeutic orientations has repeatedly shown that no one approach is more effective than another, and that it is the therapeutic relationship itself that is the fundamental element of success (Corey, 2005). Classical CBT has its limitation related especially to existential questions, such as meaning of life, acceptance of unchangeable aspects, meaning of values, transcendence, significance of experiences, etc. (Prasko, et al., 2012). Both existential psychotherapy and CBT, overlap and have differences. Both existential psychotherapy and CBT strongly stress the central role of the subjective meaning, phenomenology, rationality, training of coping skills, and the importance of immediate emotional experience (Prasko, et al., 2012). In addition, the existential psychotherapy more emphasizes transcendence of the man, responsibility, acceptance, and the motivation of the man to achieve the subjective sense of life (Deurzen, 2002). An integration of existential views to the CBT approach could deepen the treatment of the clients. Both therapies meet at the notion that the individual is conceived of as having the freedom to choose who he/she wants to be. I can use this approach effectively on clients that are struggling with anxiety and depression that tend to be indecisive and disordered. For example, existential questions can assist the client in determining priorities. We could talk about life roles from being a parent, friend, spouse, person, etc. and prioritize these values. What are your expectations of yourself, your life? Also I would use CBT to approach the problem through wise decision making and mindfulness. I am still gaining knowledge on specifically how to incorporate interventions appropriately. It is important for me to know my client and what process and interventions look to be the best fit for them in treatment. References Corey, G. (2005).
