You mentioned some great information and characteristics. I plan to work with Sex offenders in treatment and their families. While the traditional role of therapy attempts to empathize with the client, sex offender treatment is different. According to Jensen & Jewel-Jensen (1998) and Carich, Newbauer, & Stone (2001) counseling sex offenders involves protecting society from harm and protecting the offender from further harm to him or herself. With sex offenders confrontation is more often used by addressing cognitive distortions or helping the clients to understand the behavioral processes that lead to their pattern of offending (Carich, Newbauer, & Stone, 2001). I currently work for a long-term care center. I have to remind myself while working with this type of group caution must be taken in regards to disclosure and empathizing. Empathy and intimacy are critical elements of treatment for sex offenders, but to avoid opportunities to influence the sex offender to manipulative the treatment and avoid responsibility or take on the role of the victim more training beyond graduate level work is needed (Worling & Curwen, 2000).
