Changes to the Brain: Caring for Memory Loss Patients Chemical Change: When learning something new, there is a chemical shift in the beginning. Chemical changes have the greatest impact on short-term memory and the capacity to improve motor abilities . Change in structure: Changes in neuronal connections can cause changes in the structure of the brain. This kind of change requires more effort and time. To increase motor skills, one needs to practice purposeful repetition and have long-term memory. Functional change: Our understanding of how our brains work changes as entire brain networks undergo change. These natural circuits become more efficient overall and more receptive to stimulation when used on an ongoing basis. 2023 3
