1 Adult Vocational Development Vicky Caldwell University of Arizona Global Campus PSY 5130: Lifespan Development Dr. Lori December 4, 2023
2 Adult Vocational Development This week’s readings provided me with articles full of information concerning how vocational development affects adults. Adults strive to balance relationships, which involves social, emotional, and continuing education to increase job skills. Adults also return to school to keep up with the rapid advancement of technology and job markets (Mossler & Ziegler, 2016). Adults accept more responsibilities, social and environmental, which also involve emotional changes. Although assuming adult roles requires a commitment to maintaining family, socialization with co-workers and working plays a vital role in maintaining balance, which is needed to obtain financial security. The theory that piqued my interest involves the Super Stage theory vocational development by Donald Super which involves five unique career development factors. The five development factors are exploration, establishment, maintenance, and deceleration. Exploration occurs between fifteen and twenty-four years of age. Establishment occurs during the early adulthood phase. Maintenance occurs through the middle childhood phase and Deceleration occurs during the late adulthood phase. While researching theories on adult vocational development I realized that not all individuals can change job positions due to excelling at different skill sets. The difference between Super’s theory and Dr. Hollands theory enables individual’s choosing careers based potential co-workers with similar personalities as themselves. Dr. Holland theory combines six personality constructs such as personality, social psychology, vocational behavior, self-perception, and social stereotypes (Keller et.al , 2023).
3 Erikson’s theory is guided by Sigmund’s Freud psychoanalysts explores three aspects of identity such as self, personal, and social identity. However, Erikson’s theory involves integrity, trust, social interaction plays a vital role in personality development, conflict, and development tasks provides the elements required for successful vocational development. Based on Erikson’s theory factors are vital to developing integrity leads to building trust as individuals age (Mossler & Ziegler, 2016). Generally, individuals are focused on working to build up a retirement fund by saving a percentage of their pay checks that leads to financial benefits, personal associations which enable psychosocial growth. The one best practice individuals can incorporate non-work-related plans and long-term financial plans. Incorporating short-and long-term plans aid individuals in narrowing down intrinsic and extrinsic aspects that provides motivation. As far as personal educational goals are concerned there are individuals who continue to take college courses to have skills to rely on in case their current job decides to lay people off or close their doors (Orenstein et.al 2023). When individuals determine their motivational factors enables individual’s to be open to new ideas while gaining an education to improve skills required to advance career opportunities or working at their current jobs. I will also let the person know they can come to me for advice and support. References: Keller, C., Döring, A.,K., & Makarova, E. (2023).
