1 Pashundra Joseph Assignment 2 - The Gender Reveal 1. Describe the various forms that "gender reveals" are now taking. (Use APA 7th edition to cite your sources.) One particularly noteworthy type of gender reveal parties are those that cause severe damage to entire states, such as the 2020 El Dorado Fires in Yucaipa, CA. The New York Times article by Morales and Waller (2021) utilized pyrotechnic displays that detonate in various colors to indicate the fetus's gender (Diaz, 2018). Less lethal forms of festivities typically involve using a cake with an interior color that symbolizes the kid's gender. NPR published an item on a mother who gained popularity for introducing her daughter's gender reveal party to the public following a series of miscarriages. Instead of a risky approach, she chose a cake with either pink or blue icing concealed within (Garcia-Navarro, 2019). She desired to commemorate her child's achievement, reaching a significant milestone by gathering her nearest and dearest (Shetty, 2023). 2. Describe the presumed gender(s) of the "hypothetical" parents and the circumstances of the upcoming birth. (e.g., Unplanned? Planned? Assisted due to fertility issues? Surrogate? Adoption?) Are these circumstances influencing the conversation? In this scenario, I will assume that the fictional parents are a couple consisting of a male and female who identify as non-binary and use the pronouns they/them. It is generally thought that the parents' sex is male and female, but their genders may differ from what might be inferred based on their biological characteristics. As mature humans, we can select our gender; in this hypothetical situation, I can also choose their gender. They anticipate a scheduled surrogate birth
2 to avoid experiencing the physical discomforts of childbirth. Their amiable childhood acquaintance willingly volunteered to care for their offspring on their behalf. The couple did not encounter any fertility problems and did not undergo in vitro insemination. The introduction of a third sexual partner into the family is a highly debated matter, with the family expressing strong opposition. Conversely, the buddies gathered by the fire pit in the backyard are receptive to the scenario. Although they may perceive it as unconventional, they do not possess the inclination to resist their companions' pursuit of a fulfilling existence. 3. What might this family argue are the PROs for holding a "gender reveal?" One advantage of hosting a gender reveal event is that it allows for the celebration of a significant stage in the fetus's development. The sex of a child significantly influences the way they are regarded in society. The gender of a child will define the challenges they will encounter in the forthcoming years of their life. Additionally, it generates anticipation for parents on the developmental milestones they might anticipate while raising their children. They can increase the child in an environment where they can independently identify their gender later. The gender of a newborn, whether male or female, should equally bring joy to the parents. 4. What might this family argue are the NEGATIVES for holding a "gender reveal?" It is crucial to acknowledge the drawbacks of hosting a gender reveal party. Undoubtedly, the biological sex of the infant at birth is inconsequential. Imposing expectations on a child's lifestyle without giving them the freedom to explore and define their gender can hinder their authentic growth within their surroundings. Additionally, a potential issue to consider is the family's emotional distress arising from the introduction of a romantic surrogate into the relationship. This can be classified as a "familial moral code" and a tradition in which a family opposes the inclusion of a third partner. Another drawback is the presence of a particular family
3 member or acquaintance who persistently offers unappetizing homemade delicacies that nobody enjoys consuming. The cost of catering can be high and detrimental to the funds that would often be allocated for the child's upbringing. Furthermore, what if the projected gender was erroneous, resulting in a substantial amount of money being squandered? 5. What is your view of this? Is your view influenced by your generation (i.e. age, culture, religion, or family traditions?) In my perspective, the answer is affirmative: proceed with organizing the gender reveal celebration. Naturally, the infant will ultimately determine gender, but that should not hinder you from enjoying yourself. There is no definitive guideline that explicitly states gender reveal parties are morally incorrect. I am 35 years old. Celebrating this milestone should not be influenced by factors such as my faith, age, or family customs. However, the emphasis has transitioned from commemorating the many stages of fetal development to the gender with which the kid elects to identify in the forthcoming years. Although I do not see any issue with commemorating your non-binary child's birthday celebration, organizing a gender reveal party when they are 17 years old is absurd. Undoubtedly, the parents have been aware of his non- binary identity since his early childhood. Simply label it as a celebration/party.
