Both Genetics and epigenetics affect us as a person in our behavior and disease. This also affects our psychological traits by affecting the way we associate with other people. Other than DNA sequence, epigenetics involves the control of genetics by factors. “Epigenetics is the study of how your behaviors and environment can cause changes that affect the way your genes work. Unlike genetic changes, epigenetic changes are reversible and do not change your DNA sequence, but they can change how your body reads a DNA sequence,” (CDC, 2022). This often results in changes in genes, whereby making diseases like cancer or mental retardation inherited genetic properties. When there are changes in psychological characteristics, this will affect the way we see situations, culture, and other people. Why is this so? It’s understandable that gene modification will determine one’s personality, behavior, and cognitive functions. “Several lifestyle factors have been identified that might modify epigenetic patterns, such as diet, obesity, physical activity, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, environmental pollutants, psychological stress, and working on night shifts,” (PMC, 2013). When the epigenetic modifies, our values can change as a result of environmental factors, exposure to new elements, and what we eat. Diseases such as cancer and mental retardation can help us understand their impacts on our lives. Reference: CDC, (2022). What is Epigenetics?.
