Naturalistic Observation Study 1-1: My research plan would be a naturalistic observation of couples in various social settings and recording their behaviors, interactions, and compatibility. I would note similarities or differences in their personalities and evaluate whether partners with similar or opposite characters’ form successful romantic relationships. 12: One challenge of using naturalistic observation is the need for more control over the observed situation, making it difficult to isolate and measure specific factors contributing to successful relationships. Additionally, observer bias may influence the interpretation of behaviors. Laboratory Observation Study: 2-1: In a laboratory observation study, I would bring couples into a controlled environment and systematically manipulate their personalities to evaluate the effects on their relationship success. I would observe their interactions, communication patterns, and overall satisfaction while varying whether their personalities are similar or opposite. 2-2: A challenge of using laboratory observation is that the controlled environment may need to reflect real-life situations and dynamics in natural settings accurately. Participants' behaviors and responses may be influenced by the artificiality of the laboratory setting, potentially limiting the generalizability of the findings. Survey Design: 3—1: Questionnaire Questions: o On a scale of 1 to 7, how important is it for you to have a partner with a similar personality? o In your experience, have you found that relationships with partners who have similar or opposite personalities tend to be more successful? o How would you describe your personality traits? (Provide a list of traits for respondents to choose from) o How would you describe your ideal partner's personality traits? (Provide a list of traits for respondents to choose from) 3-2: Something to Avoid: Avoid using leading or biased questions that may sway participants' responses or reinforce a particular perspective. Questions should be neutral and open-ended to elicit honest and unbiased answers. 3-3: Interview Questions o Can you describe what factors you believe contribute to a successful romantic relationship? o In your own experience, have you found that partners with similar or opposite personalities are more compatible? o How do you believe personality compatibility influences relationship satisfaction? o Have you ever been in a relationship where you and your partner had opposite personalities?
3-4: A challenge of using interviews is that responses may be influenced by social desirability bias, where participants provide answers that they perceive as socially acceptable or desirable rather than reflecting their true thoughts or experiences.
