Discuss how you as a group leader will use self-disclosure in the group setting. How will you attend to transference in your work as a group leader? I often use self-disclosure in the group setting. I find that it is a way to allow my group members to identify me as a person that they can trust as opposed to just the authority in the room. For instance, during check in with my recovery group a client asked me if I could check in with them as well, so I did. I was unable to share all the check in steps as I do not have a substance use disorder but by sharing my highs and lows for the week, I became more human to the group. When it comes to transferrance I am sometimes willing to share with the group. If they say something that makes me feel some kind of way, by sharing it with the group I can display empathy for their situation. I just have to make sure that I do so in a way that does not take the attention off of the member that is doing the sharing.
