What would you do if you were providing a psychological test to a counseling client and an issue arose in which your ethics conflicted with the established state and federal laws and codes of ethics? Provide an example to support your response. If a counselor was providing a psychological test to a counseling client and an issue arose where a counselor put their own personal beliefs/ethics into the assessment. The counselor would then have to follow the right ethical protocols to ensure no harm was done to the client. An example of a counselor putting their own personal ethics into a client's assessment would be if the counselor discovered from the assessment that the client is having a hard time coming out to their family, and the counselor was against that community and told the family about the client. That would be going against confidentiality ethics and not causing harm to a client ethics as well. If a counselor does put their own personal ethics into the clients assessment, the counselor then needs to take reasonable steps to correct or minimize the misrepresentation. If a counselor has substantially harmed the client and it was not properly resolved then further action must be taken. The further action that would be taken at this point would be a referral to state or national committees, licensing boards, or institutional authorities. It is the counselors duty to respect and follow the protocols, ethics, laws, and guidelines to ensure the best care of their client and to ensure no harm is being done mentally, physically, sexually, emotionally, or socially.
