Topic 1 DQ 1 (Obj. 1.2) Practical Dilemmas (Substantive Responses to the “Question” Will Count for Participation Points!) Do some research from the 50’s to the present about “Social environment that sends us mixed messages about drug-taking behavior” How was this done then and now? Have things changed?   Shared your research and thoughts on this topic. It is important that we first define the word “drug” as something that alters a persons mental or physical state. With that being said, alcohol and tobacco were huge in the 50s and according to Levinthal (2023) regular cigarette smoking was done by more than half of all male adults and more than 1/4 th  of all female adults in the United States. During this time cocktail parties were common and the two-martini lunch was a normal thing. Drugs, at the time to this population meant things such as heroin, meth, marijuana etc. and no one knew you did it if you did it. This can send mixed messages because all of these substances are drugs but alcohol and cigarettes were viewed as ok. The same thing could be said in todays society but with different substances and opioids being the number one problem. If they are prescribed to you then its ok but if you are one of the ones that got hooked on them then that’s too bad and its your fault. The same could be said with Marijuana since it is considered mainstream now which sends big time mixed signals especially with children. As a parent I will talk to my kids about marijuana but its kind of hard when Hannah Montana is on the news for smoking a bong. For me the stigma has not changed at all, in essence its the same thing, different substances with the same views on them.  Reference Levinthal, C. F. (2023).
