Counseling Skills Reflection As I reflect on my two years in this program, I feel I have grown tremendously in my skills. I remember being extremely nervous in the first set of videos I had to create with a mock student. Looking back, I was nervous because there was a name to things that I was unsure about. After practicing, I realized that I had these skills all along. My approach to counseling is to be kind and compassionate. My grandmother taught me that it takes zero effort to be kind to people and you never know how your kindness can change someone’s life. I use that approach in my classroom and my role as a counselor. My theoretical orientation teeter-totters between cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) and solution-focused therapy (SFT). My overall goal and objective is to try to get my students to get to the root of their issues and develop sustainable solutions. In my evaluations, I received extremely positive feedback. I am humbled by the feedback because I am always harshest on myself. To hear that I am on the right track gives me the confidence and motivation to keep going. One thing that my most recent field supervisor encouraged me to do is to always remember the fine line between counseling and advising. Hearing the good feedback is wonderful but it’s the areas of growth that I truly need to better myself. While this wasn't mentioned in my evaluation, I believe that one of the areas that I want to work on is specifically ending the sessions on time. I am a natural listener and I tend to let the client/student talk. Many times, I have a hard time redirecting the conversation back to the presenting issue. This is something I will continually strive to improve.
