Name: Period: -P EOALITINEDINO)ND)2E S CLUSTER C Personality disorders that are linked to anxiety fall under Cluster C. In this group, the three are avoidant personality disorder, dependent personality disorder, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. They are marked by pervasive anxiety. A person who experiences social inhibition, extreme shyness, and is sensitive to criticism, may have an avoidant personality disorder. They avoid people or situations due to a fear of rejection which is painful to them. They may see neutral situations as being negative and may not have close friends. There are treatments to assist people with AVPD which help their avoidance; however, they still may be naturally shy. Yet, many with AVPD do not seek treatment as they do not know that they have it. Dependent personality disorder causes one to fear being alone, so they do whatever they can to have others take care of them. They have difficulty making decisions without others assisting them, and they are very clingy. They do not trust themselves and become reliant on others. However, sometimes their constant need for support hinders their ability to form relationships. The disorder can be seen in childhood, and with a combination of therapy and medication, it is treatable so the affected person can feel free to live a fuller life. A person who exhibits a preoccupation with perfectionism, order, cleanliness, and controlling relationships may be showing signs of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Although the name is similar and there may be some carry-over traits, it is not obsessive- compulsive disorder. Their need for keeping everything in order can sometimes lead to anxiety, and even depression, as maintaining close relationships can be difficult. Although they can be hardworking, their need for perfection can cause them to work inefficiently, which can also cause anxiety at work. Traditionally, treatment includes cognitive behavior therapy, medication, and relaxation training. Checking for Understanding: After reading the article, answer the following questions. 1. How are all three of these personality disorders linked to anxiety? 2. Why may a person with dependent personality disorder find it difficult to form and maintain relationships? 3. Why would obsessive-compulsive personality disorder impact one at work?
