1 Complete the active-constructive responding exercise (pp. 271-272 in textbook). Discussyour experience. How does this relate to the readings? I participated in an active-constructive response exercise as part of my exploration of positive psychology principles, which was inspired by Christopher Peterson's book "A Primer in Positive Psychology." In this perceptive text, the transforming potential of pleasant encounters is explored, along with how they affect our general wellbeing and happiness (Peterson, 2006). I had the chance to practise active-constructive response while doing this exercise by talking to my close friend, Alex. In regards to their artistic endeavours, Alex just told me some exciting news. They were exhibiting "Euphoria's Canvas," a special mixed-media piece, at a prestigious art show. At first, I had a more passive and shallow reaction to their news. Without truly embracing their achievement, I simply said, "Congratulations!" But after getting some ideas from Peterson's book, I saw the value of active participation and made the decision to take a more positive tack. I was genuinely excited when Alex told me about their accomplishment and wanted to know more about how they developed as an artist. Alex, you've done something genuinely amazing! Thank you for getting selected for such a prominent art event. What inspired your installation? Please tell me more about it. When you learned the news, how did you feel? I excitedly listened to their response while maintaining eye contact and a kind grin. This responsive, constructive action had a tangible effect. They discussed the specifics of their creative process, and Alex's face lit up with excitement. They discussed the elaborate symbolism included in their installation and the emotional journey it symbolised. I developed a closer relationship with Alex and helped them feel validated and proud through my attentive listening and sincere interest. This encounter is consistent with Peterson's emphasis on the power of constructive encounters to foster both individual development and the enlargement of bonds between people. "A Primer in Positive Psychology" emphasises the importance of acknowledging successes and showing genuine interest in the interests and accomplishments of others. As a result of the active-constructive response exercise motivated by Peterson's book, I
2 was able to see the transformational potential of interacting with Alex's artistic accomplishment. I forged a stronger bond with Alex and added to his happiness and sense of artistic fulfilment by attentively listening, showing genuine interest, and posing particular questions.
