Telingator & Woyewodzic, (2011), reveal that sexual behavior in adolescence and one’s identity as heterosexual, gay, lesbian, or bisexual may change over time. “The fluidity of sexual desire, behavior, and identity may be a fundamental characteristic of sexuality during the teenage years.” Complicated cultural and social identities influence sexual identity as well, but not necessarily sexual behavior. Based on the above, it could be an enigma, a sad , crude or even threatening to realize that puberty with its burgeoning sexuality can plunge the teenager in a mire of confusion.At this stage of growth development, teenagers start to become aware of this burgeoning sexuality that shifts their emotions and identity, many, if not some of them struggle with the truth of their sexuality and end up taking on identities that seem aberrant with the normal identity for them to be explained to the biological and probably spiritual maxims of human growth for them to emerge out of the role confusion that seems to be gripping them at this particular moment. I believe teenage hood is the stage where adults need to be equipped with the physiological, emotional and psychological knowledge of what is transpiring in the teenager’s mind for them to be guided to make right choices that will help them fit in society. For example, when a teenager declares that he or she is attracted to someone of the same sex,this is not a time to judge them, but this should be an opportunity for the teenager to be guided in the truth of what is happening to them.It may not necessarily mean that they are gay or lesbian, but this could suggest the confusion that is shifting their identity and it is at this point that role models and mentors step in and guide this teenager. After all, Paediatric Child Health, (2002) reveals that the process of declaring a homosexual identity is often referred to as ‘coming out’. It can start with homosexual fantasies or dreams, with the realization that one is attracted to people of the same gender, with a feeling that one is different from one’s peers or even with a sexual experience. The teen may experience identity confusion at this point, being aware of same-sex attractions but in turmoil about it. This confusion is influenced by the stigma attached to homosexuality, inaccurate knowledge, lack of role models and minimal opportunity to socialize with other youth who are having similar feelings. Further confusion may result if the youth also experiences some opposite-sex attractions. The teen may not acknowledge their orientation, avoid thinking about it or come up with an alternate explanation for their feelings (6). The challenge for gay and lesbian youth is to develop a healthy and integrated identity in the context of negative stereotypes and prejudice, often without family or societal support. Secondly,it is also important to note that sexual minority adolescents tend to experience sexual health disparities.Even as Saewyc, (2011) reveals that many adolescents who seem to exhibit aberrant sexual orientation are at a higher risk of being bullied,abused, and harassed.Additionally, they tend to struggle with body image, overweight, eating disorders ,sexual risky behaviors such as condom use and contraceptives,substance use and probably mental health and suicidal thoughts all attributed to the coming out process.
The “coming out” process according to Collins Dictionary, (2023) is defined as the act of revealing one's sexual orientation or gender identity. Because of the effect of their sexual orientation that many times seems to be in aberration to society’s expectations, these adolescents tend to hush this confusion which many times dumps them into a mental depression. Therefore, my though question is: What important psycho-social mentoring questions should be designed and posed to non sexual and sexual minority youth to help them find their rightful identity without lingering in an unending mire of confusion?
